Prerequisites

Students must have enrolled on the master’s degree programme.


Objectives and Contextualisation

The general aim of this subject is for students to consolidate concepts and methodologies to apply them to the practice or study of translation and interculturality.


Learning Outcomes

  1. CA01 (Competence) Apply the main concepts linked to the study of translation and interculturality to analyse texts and translations from a translation studies point of view.
  2. CA02 (Competence) Apply a critical perspective to the analysis of texts, identifying elements that reflect visions of reality biased by ideological and sociocultural elements.
  3. CA03 (Competence) Apply the main concepts linked to discourse analysis to analyse different types of text and discursive mechanisms in multicultural environments in order to understand and interpret texts.
  4. KA01 (Knowledge) Explain the stages of the translation process in a translation assignment, the elements involved in this process and their implications, to integrate it into the practice and study of translation.
  5. KA02 (Knowledge) Illustrate the principles and foundations of ethics in translation to apply them in the practice and study of translation.
  6. KA03 (Knowledge) Identify the different contributions that have been made in the field of translation and the changes experienced in the Western cultural model.
  7. SA01 (Skill) Analyse the decisions related to your own or someone else's translation, taking into account the communicative purpose of the translation and the dynamic and contextual nature of the translation equivalence.
  8. SA02 (Skill) Apply advanced knowledge to detect and understand the cultural connotations implicit in texts.
  9. SA03 (Skill) Analyse the intervention of the translator as a cultural mediator when it comes to transferring cultural references, distinguishing the translation techniques used according to the context.
  10. SA04 (Skill) Assess the main inequalities based on sex/gender that appear in the texts in the field of translation and interculturality.

Content

The methodological contents emphasise the communicative aspect of translation and the importance of context. The stages of the translation process are also covered, with an emphasis on ethics applied to translation (e.g. individual and professional ethics, ethical leadership in intercultural management, ethical dilemmas, sensitive issues and situations, SDGs, AI). The main concepts in translation, such as equivalence, unity, invariability, method, technique, strategy, problem and error, will be established.

Other content covered in this course ranges from anthropological to cultural aspects, including learning about the parameters of discourse analysis and reflecting on the impact of translation on the development of cultures, using Western culture as an example. To this end, the course focuses on the role of translation in linguistic and intercultural mediation.

IMPORTANT

Reminder: "copying" is considered to be work that reproduces all or a large part of the work from one to another colleague, and "plagiarism" is the act of presenting part or all of an author’s text as one’s own, that is, without citing the sources, whether it is published on paper or in digital form on the Internet. Copying and plagiarism are intellectual theft and therefore contravene university regulations that will be sanctioned with a "zero" mark. In the case of copying between two students, if it is not possible to know who copied who, the sanction will be applied to both students. If there are several irregularities in the evaluation activities of the same subject, the final grade of this subject will be zero.
