Prerequisites

In order to enrol in the Bachelor's Degree Final Project, it is necessary to have passed at least two thirds of the total number of credits in the syllabus and all the subjects of the 1st year, in accordance with the academic regulations of the UAB (Student Permanence Regime)

Objectives and Contextualisation

The Bachelor's Degree Final Project is conceived as an autonomous work of the student, which must be carried out individually under the supervision of one (or two) directors of the project, of which at least one must belong to one of the Departments that teach in the Degree in Environmental Sciences . The work is 6 credits, which corresponds to a work of 150 hours by the student.

The Final Degree Project will consist of addressing a topic or project on which the student will apply the knowledge acquired in one or more areas of the degree. Its development will include a bibliographic search and an experimental and/or data analysis part understood in a broad sense (either focused on laboratory work, or statistical calculations, or fieldwork, or surveys, interviews, data collection, market research, etc.).

Content

In order for each student to decide on the topic of their TFG, the following options will be established:

Option 1: Each of the Departments with assigned teaching staff (through the teaching staff they designate, if applicable) will make proposals for topics. The number of proposals made must be in proportion to the teaching load foreseen by the Department (in accordance with the criterion of Point 2).

Option 2: Students who prefer it may propose topics autonomously, but in this case the acceptance of the topic will be at the expense of (i) the teacher responsible for the TFG giving her approval, and (ii) the students find a member of the teaching staff of the degree willing to supervise the TFG. Students must establish contact with the teaching staff to agree on the theme, and the work guideline of the project. Once the agreement has been reached, it must be communicated to the coordination of the subject by means of the proposal form, duly signed by both parties, before the end of September. In the event that the student is unable to find teachers who agree to tutor the proposed topic, the coordination will propose and assign one of the topics offered by the teaching staff.

Option 3: Students may alternatively carry out the TFG in an entity external to the UAB (research centres, institutions, etc.) under the supervision of a person from that entity. Again, this option will be at the expense of (i) the professor responsible for the TFG giving her approval, and (ii) an internal tutor from the UAB (who is part of the Departments teaching in the degree) is assigned, who will ensure that the TFG is developed in accordance with the appropriate guidelines and criteria.

The guidelines to be followed by the proposals and topics of the TFG will be established in a document that will be made available to both students and teachers so that they can use it as a guide.

The contents of the subject include: Determination of a topic of study. Evaluation of thebackground and the state of the art. Planning and chronological management of the project. Obtaining and describing results. Integration and discussion of the results obtained from the state of the art. Main conclusions of the final degree project. Communication and presentation of the final degree project.

Assignment of TFG topics

The process of assigning TFG topics will be based on the following guidelines:

  • Students who have proposed topics autonomously and/or develop the work in an external entity once approved will be assigned the proposed topic.
  • For the rest of the students, a list of possible topics will be drawn up with all the proposals received from the Departments. From this list, students will be asked to fill out a form with their topic preferences. The person responsible for the TFG will be in charge of matching these student preferences with the proposals on the list to make the final assignment, taking into account that the number of proposals assigned to each Department must be maintained.
  • In the event that difficulties or eventualities arise that justify it, students may request a change of TFG topic after the assignment process. In any case, it will be at the discretion of the person responsible for the TFG to assess whether the reason for the change is sufficiently justified and to accept it, if applicable.

The TFG tutor teaching staff

The process of supervision and monitoring of the TFGs will be the responsibility of the teaching staff appointed by the Departments. In those cases where it is necessary/convenient, the co-direction modality can be established, so that the supervision of the same TFG falls on two or more members of the teaching staff (from the same Department, or from different Departments) in order to reinforce the integrative and multidisciplinary nature that the TFG of the Bachelor's Degree in Autonomous Communities must have

This process will consist of:

  • A minimum of three follow-up meetings. For each of these meetings, the supervising teaching staff must fill out a report briefly evaluating the level of achievement of the students' objectives and partial tasks throughout the TFG process.
  • The drafting of a final report for the follow-up of the TFG, which will evaluate both the overall process of the work and the final report presented based on a rubric that the TFG coordination will send to all the directors and tutors of the work.

The tutor teaching staff must deliver to the course coordinator the minutes of the meetings and the final report of the TFG, within the deadlines established in the official calendar of the subject, which will be published at the beginning of the academic year.

The student must carry out a personal and original research project, under the supervision of a tutor teaching staff. The work will be carried out individually, although, during its development, collaborative dynamics may be established in the event that several people share the same case study.

The work must comply with the criteria and requirements established by the regulations of the subject.

Once the research process has been completed, the student will prepare a written report and prepare an oral presentation for the defense of the work before an evaluation committee made up of professors of the degree.

At the time of choosing the topic and formalizing the enrollment, the student must indicate whether they will present the work in the February or June call, taking into account that only one presentation is allowed per call or academic year.

Most of the work will be carried out autonomously by the student, including the collection and analysis of information, the development of the research, the writing of the report and the preparation of the oral defense.

The tutor and the student must agree on at least three tutorials throughout the course to monitor the work.

The coordinator of the subject will inform of the organization of the subject and the corresponding calendar through its own space on the Virtual Campus

Written memory and oral presentation

A model document of the report will be posted on the Virtual Campus as a guide. The document must have a maximum of 10000 words and must include the following sections:

  • Cover page: with the title, the name of the authors and tutors, the reference of the course and indicating that it is a Final Degree Project of the Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences of the UAB. It will also indicate, if applicable, the institutions that have collaborated in making the TFG
    • Acknowledgements (optional)
    • Table of Contents
    • Summary
    • Introduction/Background
    • Project objectives
    • Methodology
    • Results and discussion
    • Conclusions
    • Bibliography
    • Annexes (if necessary)

In the calculation of the length, the sections from the introduction to the conclusions will be considered, excluding the index, the initial abstract, the bibliography and the annexes.

The oral presentation will last a maximum of 15 minutes and will be followed by a discussion with the evaluation committee (2 professors) of a maximum of 15 minutes. The questions will be aimed at finding out if the student has reached the maturity and knowledge necessary for the Degree in Environmental Sciences. The presentation will be made before an evaluation panel made up of 2 professors in an open session.

Both the report and the presentation can be made in Catalan, Spanish or English.

Estimated, the oral defenses of the TFG will be scheduled one week before the closing date of the corresponding call (February or July). The delivery of the report through the Virtual Campus will be made two weeks before the date of the face-to-face defense.

The deadlines for submitting the report will be announced at the beginning of the course through the Virtual Campus.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Continous Assessment Activities

Title Weighting Hours ECTS Learning Outcomes
The jury's assessment of the oral presentation and the answers to the questions 40% 0 0 CM50, CM51, CM53, KM65, SM62, SM64
Monitoring report from the supervising professor 30% 0 0 CM50, CM52, CM53, SM62, SM63, SM64
The court's assessment of the written report 30% 0 0 CM50, CM52, KM65, KM66, SM62, SM64

The evaluation process of the TFG will assess (i) the continuous work carried out by the students throughout the subject, (ii) the TFG report presented at the end, and (iii) an oral presentation of the TFG, in accordance with the following guidelines:

  • 30% of the final grade: evaluation of the TFG supervisor, based on the documentation (follow-up acts and final report) of the monitoring process.
  • 70% of the final grade: evaluation by a panel made up of 2 members, and chosen from among the teaching staff of the degree and/or the supervising teaching staff of the TFGs according to criteria of (i) thematic affinity and (ii) teaching distribution between Departments. Each member of the panel will assess both the report of the TFG and the oral presentation through an evaluation template that the person in charge of the TFG will send them beforehand.

The person responsible for the TFG will reserve the right to make the appropriate consultations with the supervising teaching staff and/or the members of the examination board in order to clarify the nature of the marks proposed by each of them. In any case, the person responsible for the TFG will be the person in charge of assigning a final grade to each TFG and transferring the corresponding information to the evaluation report.

The final grade of Fail does not allow the work to be resubmitted within the same course and the student must re-enroll in the TFG the following year. The grade will be Not Assessable if the student does not submit the written work to the tutor or the examining board within the assigned period. In addition, the document may not be evaluated in the following cases:

  • The text has spelling and grammatical errors that make it seriously difficult to understand.
  • The content is not original: it has been copied or translated in whole or in part from other sources. This fact, in the final delivery, implies that the TFG will not be passed.
  • The sources of information are not cited, or are incorrectly cited.
  • The sources used are not valid or rigorous.
  • Tables or figures from other works or sources have been incorporated without respecting copyright.
  • The format of the tables or figures is inadequate: lack of title, numbering, description or reference to the body of the text.

Use of AI

Restricted use. For this subject, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is allowed exclusively in support tasks, such as searching for information or bibliography, extracting content from documents, translating texts and correcting grammar. The generation of textual content using these tools is not allowed. The student should clearly identify which parts have been generated with this technology, specify the tools used, and include critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and the final outcome of the activity. The non-transparency of the use of AI in this assessable activity will be considered academic dishonesty and may lead to a partial or total penalty in the grade of the activity, or greater sanctions in cases of severity.

Bibliography

The tutor of the work will suggest a basic bibliography to the student according to the proposed topic.

A virtual campus will be enabled with a section of Tools for the TFG offered by different UAB Libraries, which includes modules on copyright and plagiarism, citations and bibliography and guidelines for communicating the work.
