Prerequisites
It is recommended to have taken the subject "Basic Concepts in Anthropology" in the First Semester
Objectives and Contextualisation
The subject "Nature, Culture and Development" is a first approach to the relationship between the two
nature-culture in order to place it in the tradition of Western thought and not as a human universal.
From the approach of Anthropology as a theoretical and practical science, students are offered a
approach and a disciplinary look at conceptions and representations about the link between nature and culture
from two perspectives: historical and ethnographic. It is for this reason that the subject is structured in
around a theoretical but also ethnographic part where the presentation of empirical cases will provide the
students examples of research, ethnographic analysis and anthropological application in contexts where nature and the
development are key.
Students are expected to be able to develop a critical and constructive approach to the
intervention practices on nature and also on the development models driven by them
policies of the Western world and, at the same time, that they are familiar with the ethnographic cases that will serve us
as an example of how the human being is related to his environment.
The training objectives are the following:
Ask questions about the culture-society-nature relationship / relationship between humans - non-humans through the
time and in different cultures.
Express comparative points of view between Western Society and other types of societies.
Analyze texts, documents, exhibitions and audiovisuals.
Have conceptual, theoretical and analytical tools to evaluate development projects, of
cooperation and also alternatives to development.
Learning Outcomes
- CM08 (Competence) Evaluate the social, economic and environmental impact in the understanding of socio-cultural contexts and situations.
- CM10 (Competence) Use an appropriate specific vocabulary in the transmission of basic anthropological information.
- KM09 (Knowledge) Identify the cultural character of conceptualisations and practices, as well as the various institutional systems that govern societies.
- SM10 (Skill) Interpret socio-cultural contexts and situations by applying the basic concepts of anthropological theory.
- SM13 (Skill) Analyse social phenomena from an anthropological perspective.

3. Beliefs, symbolism and ritual: neopaganism and eco-spirituality
4. Introduction of species: the bear, the wolf and the otter.
5. Nature, culture and health

8. "Domesticated" nature - "Wild" nature: Zoos, natural parks, museums, gardens and labyrinths, animals

Block 3. Development, cooperation and alternatives to development
1. The Development paradigm. Origin, proposals and practices. Nature models as a
sociocultural constructs in the framework of power relations: from colonialism to political environmentalism.
2. Development models. Rights of nature?
3. NGOs, development projects, nature protection figures
4. Alternative proposals for development: ecofeminism, Sumak Kawsay, degrowth,
ecodevelopment, bioculture, natural heritage.

During the subject there will be: theoretical classes and activities led by the teacher. Search for
documentation, reading texts, writing assignments. Written assessment. This through: theoretical classes and
ICT-supported practices and group discussions. Presentation of practical intervention experiences
sociocultural and environmental. Viewing and discussion of audiovisuals and texts.
Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Continued avaluation
The evaluation of this subject will be continuous.
Passing the final exam will be mandatory to pass the subject.
All the delivered activities that make up the assessment with the exception of the classroom activities will be recoverable
on the official date marked for Recovery.
Unique assessment
The single assessment will consist of three assessment activities that will take place, all three, on the same day:
Final exam and monograph exam (60% of the final mark)
Delivery of the 3 reviews: this delivery will be made on the same day as the two exams (40% of the
final note)
