Prerequisites

To take this subject, it is necessary to have an interest in literature and the arts in general (music, cinema, etc.). Responsibility and seriousness are requested, and readings, viewings, etc. are required in order to follow this subject.


Objectives and Contextualisation

The subject "Literature in the French language and other arts" offers an introduction to the relationships established between literature and other arts such as music, cinema and the plastic arts.

Through reading, analysis, debate and interpretation of written texts and other artistic creations, the student, upon completing the subject, must be able to:

- demonstrate good reading comprehension, in a broad sense, of the proposed works (literary, musical, cinematographic, etc.)

- use bibliographic resources in relation to the subject studied,

- demonstrate a good knowledge of the sociohistorical, cultural and aesthetic coordinates of the works addressed

- carry out a reasoned assessment and analysis of the works worked on through presentations and/or text comments/analysis sheets.

- examine and analyze certain forms of interaction between the fields of art and literature in the French language.

  • Evaluate and propose solutions to theoretical or practical problems in the fields of English and French literature, culture and linguistics.
  • Recognize the most significant periods, traditions, trends, authors and works of literature in English and French in their historical and social context.
  • Students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their study area) to issue judgments that include reflection on important issues of social, scientific or ethical.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must have and understand knowledge of an area of study built on the basis of general secondary education, and while it relies on some advanced textbooks it also includes some aspects coming from the forefront of its field of study.
  • Take account of social, economic and environmental impacts when operating within one's own area of knowledge.
  • Take sex- or gender-based inequalities into consideration when operating within one's own area of knowledge.
  • Use digital tools and specific documentary sources to gather and organise information.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Acquire an awareness of the diachronic dimension of French and of the conditions of creation, dissemination and preservation of major French literary texts belonging to the initial stages of the language.
  2. Apply the acquired work planning methodologies to individual and group professional tasks.
  3. Autonomously search, select and process information both from structured sources (databases, bibliographies, specialized magazines) and from across the network.
  4. Develop advanced-level critical arguments applied to the interpretation of primary and secondary sources dealing with current English-language culture and society and its textual representation.
  5. Establish relationships between science, philosophy, art, religion, politics, etc. in the historical periods under study.
  6. Express oneself effectively by applying argumentative and textual procedures in formal and scientific texts, in the language studied.
  7. Express oneself fluently, correctly, appropriately and effectively, both orally and in writing, in an academic environment.
  8. Identify the main inequalities and discriminations in terms of sex/gender present in society.
  9. Identifying various literary elements and inserting them into different texts and discursive styles.
  10. In French, justify in a reasoned, coherent and structured way one's own hypotheses and conclusions on topics of French language, linguistics, literature or culture based on relevant documentation, bibliography and data.
  11. Incorporate ideas and concepts from published sources into work, citing and referencing appropriately.
  12. Issue rating pertinent criticism supported in understanding the relevant information on issues related to the literature and culture of social, scientific or ethical concern.
  13. Locate and organise relevant English-language information available on the internet, databases and libraries, and apply this to work and/or research environments.
  14. Locate specialised and academic information and select this according to its relevance.
  15. Plan work effectively, individually or in groups, in order to fulfil the planned objectives.
  16. Produce an essay (or similar) respecting the ethical aspects related to the authorship of ideas and the diversity of opinions.
  17. Produce speeches in French adapting language register to the communicative situation.
  18. Produce works in which the fundamental digital and bibliographic tools for the field of study are applied.
  19. Rigorously assess the values conveyed by the texts analysed, making constructive criticism.
  20. Synthesise information obtained from distinct sources, problematise a topic, and structure the information in a relevant way in oral and written presentations adapted to the audience.
  21. Use appropriate terminology in the construction of an academic text.
  22. Weigh up the impact of any long- or short-term difficulty, harm or discrimination that could be caused to certain persons or groups by the actions or projects.

Content

The course focuses on the relationships between literature and other arts - such as film and music, and, to a lesser extent, painting - and aims to examine some of their historical and thematic intersections. Various forms of this dialogue will be analyzed: transfers from one art form to another (film or opera adaptations); musicalization of literary motifs, poems, etc.; inclusion of specific forms of one artistic medium in another; as well as the approach to the same genre from different creative modalities; for example, the representation of history or the portrait in literature, cinema, painting... The literary corpus addressed in this subject integrates literature in the French language.


The course is divided into three large blocks and an introduction:


0- Introduction: Notions around inter-artistic relationships

 

1- Literature and cinema:

a. writing as a model for film creation; the inclusion of poetry in cinema; and the artist's portrait
b. film adaptations: from theater and novel to screen


2- Literature and music:
a. literature, operatic adaptation and interrelation with the plastic arts
b. poetry and melody: from the musicalization of poems


3- Modes of representation of history: literature, painting, entertainment arts, cinema...


At the beginning of the course, the authors, works and other documents under analysis will be detailed.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous and consists of the following activities:

1) Reading and presentation of documents and articles on the interrelationships of French-language literature with music, cinema, ... (30%)

2) Individual file in relation to one of the program points: analysis of a case (30%)

3) Two external activities: (a) Visit to the exhibition "Agnès Varda. Photograph, film, recycle" (CCCB), (b) Attendance at the screening of a film by Agnès Varda at the Filmoteca de Catalunya (Barcelona) and (c) derived critical commentary made in a group (poetry, cinema,...) (30%)

4) Class attendance (10%)

 

The information about the assessment, the type of assessment activity and its weight on the subject is for informational purposes. The teacher responsible for the subject will specify it when beginning to teach.

 

In order to participate in the reassessment, the student must have been previously assessed in a set of activities the weight of which is equivalent to a minimum of 2/3 of the total grade. Only students who have failed and have at least an average final grade of 3.5 will have the right to reassessment.

Reassessment will consist of a final written exam (50%) and an oral interview (50%) based on the contents of the program.

Students will obtain a Not assessed/Not submitted course grade unless they have submitted more than 30% of the assessment items.

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.

In the event that tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB's virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained). Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussionon Teams, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.

Plagiarism: Total and partial plagiarismof any of the exerciseswill automatically be considered a FAILED (0) of the plagiarized exercise. Plagiarism is copying from unidentified sources, be it a single phrase or more, passing it off as one's own production (this includes copying phrases or fragments from the Internet and adding them without modification to the text presented as one's own), and it is a serious offence.

The responsibility for monitoring the training and assessment activities rests exclusively with the student

 

B. Single assessment: students can take the single assessment which will consist of a final written exam (50%) and an oral interview (50%) based on the contents of the program. The exam date of the single assessment will be the same as that of the reassessment of the continuous assessment.
