Objectives and Contextualisation

This seminar aims to address aspects related to professional communication such as reports, press articles, resumes, cover letters, formal discussions, debates, job interviews, critiques, and editorials, with the objective of deepening the understanding of various text types as well as their linguistic and communicative specificities. Oral and written productions will be evaluated based on the objectives of the C2 level of the CEFR.

 

Competences

  • Act with ethical responsibility and respect for fundamental rights and duties, diversity and democratic values.
  • Carry out effective written work or oral presentations adapted to the appropriate register in different languages.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must have and understand knowledge of an area of study built on the basis of general secondary education, and while it relies on some advanced textbooks it also includes some aspects coming from the forefront of its field of study.
  • Take account of social, economic and environmental impacts when operating within one's own area of knowledge.
  • Understand and produce oral and written academic texts with appropriateness and fluency in distinct communicative contexts.
  • Use digital tools and specific documentary sources to gather and organise information.
  • Use spoken English and French correctly for academic and professional purposes related to the study of linguistics, history, culture and literature.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Ability to maintain an appropriate conversation at a higher-proficient-user level (C2).
  2. Correctly produce texts of distinct types, applying their linguistic and discursive specificities at a higher-proficient-user level (C2).
  3. Correctly pronounce in French language at a higher-proficient-user level (C2).
  4. Critically taking part in classroom oral debates and using the discipline's specific vocabulary at a higher-proficient-user level (C2).
  5. Describe, identify and contrast the basic structures of a language.
  6. Distinguish the distinct levels of linguistic analysis and establish relationships between them.
  7. Effectively communicating and applying the argumentative and textual processes to formal and scientific texts.
  8. Express, orally and in writing, opinions or content in French with precision and clarity at a higher-proficient-user level (C2).
  9. Identify the impact of social and economic organisation on linguistic practices in French.
  10. In a responsible and reasoned way, apply the appropriate computer techniques for the consultation and management of specific documentary sources.
  11. Know how to interpret the meaning of a text in French at a higher-proficient-user level (C2).
  12. Maintain an attitude of respect for the opinions, values, behaviors and practices of others.
  13. Produce an essay (or similar) respecting the ethical aspects related to the authorship of ideas and the diversity of opinions.
  14. Produce speeches in French adapting language register to the communicative situation.
  15. Produce works in which the fundamental digital and bibliographic tools for the field of study are applied.
  16. Synthesise information obtained from distinct sources, problematise a topic, and structure the information in a relevant way in oral and written presentations adapted to the audience.
  17. Use written and spoken French language for academic and professional purposes, related to the study of French linguistics, history, culture and literature.

Traduce al ingles:  Seminario práctico de expresión en lengua francesa I. En este seminario se pretende abordar los aspectos relativos a la comunicación profesional tales como el informe, el artículo de prensa, el curriculum vitae, la carta de motivación, la discusión formal, el debate, la entrevista laboral, a crítica o el editorial con el objetivo de profundizar en el conocimiento de las distintas tipologías textuales así como de sus especificidades lingüísticas y comunicativas. Se evaluarán las producciones orales y escritas en función de los objetivos del nivel C2 del MECRL.

This course is essentially practical in nature and requires the active participation of each student.

50% of the final mark consists of several assignments throughout the course.
50% of the final course grade is based on a final written exam (20%), a final oral presentation (20%) and a final grammar and vocabulary test (10%).

Procedure for reviewing grades awarded: Unless otherwise specified, for each evaluation activity, students have can ask for reviewing the grades awarded within a week after the results are notified.
Plagiarism: In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.

Special cases: French-speaker students must meet the same conditions of assessment than the rest of students. Responsibility for the follow-up of training and assessment activities falls exclusively on the student.

"No avaluable": Students will obtain a "No avaluable" course grade unless they have submitted more than 66% of the assessment items.

Reassessment: Only students who, having failed have given at least 66% of the course evaluation items are eligible for reassessment. Reassessment consists of a final oral and/or written exam. The assignments and homework exercises are excluded from reassessment.

Single assessment: Same tasks that in the continuous assessment.
