Prerequisites

Completion or ongoing participation in the modules M4 (Pràctiques externes) or M5 (Metodologia de la recerca).

Objectives and Contextualisation

The goal of this module is to ensure that the students who complete the Masters are capable to conduct research on their own in the history of science and have acquired the skills to autonomously pursue research.

Competences

  • Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Continue the learning process, to a large extent autonomously'
  • Gather and critically assess information for problem solving, in accordance with the discipline's own analysis methods and techniques.
  • Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • Use information and communication technologies appropriately in research and in professional activity.
  • Work independently: solving problems, taking decisions and making innovative proposals.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  2. Continue the learning process, to a large extent autonomously.
  3. Gather and critically assess information for problem solving, in accordance with the discipline's own analysis methods and techniques.
  4. Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  5. Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  6. Use information and communication technologies appropriately in research and in professional activity.
  7. Work independently: solving problems, taking decisions and making innovative proposals.

Content

The student will develop the TFM (Final Masters Thesis) project presented in M4 or M5, under the supervision of the same tutor, and will produce a Final Masters Thesis that must have the utmost conceptual and formal correction.

Sessions:

1. Compulsory general tutorship. Project supervision.

2. Optional general tutorship.

July: Deadline for the submission of the TFM through the Campus Virtual.

September: Public presentation of the TFMs and evaluation.

Methodology

The module allows the student to develop the skills acquired throughout the Masters through the elaboration of the TFM. The module consists in the writing of the Thesis, once the project has been presented in M4 or M5.

In the event that activities and tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained. Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on TEAMS, etc.
Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.

Note: 15 minutes of one of the sessions will be devoted to the filling by the students of the evaluation polls in order to measure the performance of the professors and the quality of the module.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Activities

Title Hours ECTS Learning Outcomes
Type: Supervised
Elaboration of the TFM 140 5.6 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 7, 6
Meetings with supervisors 5 0.2 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 7, 6

Assessment

The TFM will be around 12.000 words (40 pages), not including the bibliography. It can adopt the format of an article publishable in a quality journal, and it can be related to any branch of the history of science.

The supervisor of the project will send to the coordinators of the module a qualification proposal (quantitative mark from 0 to 10 with one decimal) and a reasoned report justifying it. On the day set by the calendar the students will make a public presentation of their TFM in front of a commission of three professors from the Masters; in the case of the TFMs in the Communication path one of the members of the commission should ideally be the external tutor. The student will have 15 minutes to present his or her work and the conclusions.

The final mark will consist in the average between the mark of the supervisor of the TFM and the mark of the members of the commission that will act in the public examination.
