Objectives and Contextualisation

The Module 4 "Politics and Society in Eastern Asia" is a module of 10 ECTS which deals in detail with various aspects of political, economic and social thought in East Asia in order to understand its relationship with Europe and America in the construction of modernity. It applies a series of critical approaches ranging from colonialism and post-colonialism to modernity and post-modernity, post-capitalism and post-communism, introducing the gender perspective and its relationship to politics and society.

    International Relations, Security and Development
  • Analyse the international situation and recognise its complexity, using the theoretical tools seen in the master's programme, and base one's vision of the future on sound knowledge of preceding periods.
  • Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Make a diagnosis of security and development problems in the proposed countries, regions and areas of the international system, and offer useful advice for decision-making based on the diagnosis.
    Global East Asian Studies
  • Apply the paradigms and theoretical trends in the study of sociocultural and political and economic changes which, with East Asia as a principal actor, are taking place on a global scale.
  • Select and apply methodological instruments and analytical techniques which all a systematic and specialised understanding of the scenarios deriving from the redefinition of the presence of East Asia in the world.
  • Students can communicate their conclusions and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Adopt a critical perspective on current phenomena in East Asia to guide diagnosis and decision-making.
  2. Adopt a critical perspective on the phenomena taking place in contemporary East Asia that can be integrated into the diagnosis and guidelines proposed decision
  3. Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  4. Propose actions to solve problems and to point up the policy of cultural, economic and political relations with lhasa contemporary East and intercultural processes

  7. Understand the complexity of socio-political phenomena related to contemporary East Asia, with respect to both receiving countries and countries of origin.
  8. Understand the complexity of the processes of socio-political phenomena related to contemporary East Asia, in the case of countries which play the role of receiver and transmitter

Content

The module aims to the acquisition of knowledge on social and political structures, organizations and processes of East Asia and their relationship with the rest of the world, from different theoretical and methodological perspectives. The contents of the module are:

1. East Asian politics: political system and foreign policy

2. East Asian society: social and cultural transformations

3. Public policies in East Asia: identity, diversity, inequality

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.
