Objectives and Contextualisation

Skills and competences for the understanding of the problem of gender relations.

Understand and analyze gender inequalities

Know and be able to analyze gender policies from a sociological perspective

Competences

  • Analysing the problems arising from the implementation of public policies and conflict situations by recognising the complexity of the social phenomena and political decisions affecting democracy, human rights, social justice and sustainable development.
  • Applying the concepts and approaches of the sociological theory, specially the explanations of social inequalities between classes, between genders and between ethnic groups, to the implementation of public policies and to the resolution of conflict situations.
  • Assessing the contributions of sociological approaches to the study of culture, education, interaction between society and environment, social policy, and work.
  • Demonstrating a comprehension of the analysis of social phenomena presented in English, as well as observing their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Demonstrating a comprehension of the approaches of the sociological theory in its different aspects, interpretations and historical context.
  • Describing social phenomena in a theoretically relevant way, bearing in mind the complexity of the involved factors, its causes and its effects.
  • Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
  • Effectively communicating the basic analysis of social phenomena in an elementary level of English.
  • Students must be capable of assessing the quality of their own work.
  • Students must be capable of managing their own time, planning their own study, managing the relationship with their tutor or adviser, as well as setting and meeting deadlines for a work project.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Comparing the different theoretical approaches concerning social policy.
  2. Comparing the reading of social policies from several ideologies of the social reality of Spain and Catalonia.
  3. Comprehending the social interpretations of social policy in accordance with these approaches.
  4. Defining the sociological concepts that interpret social policy.
  5. Defining the underlying social phenomena of social policies and conflicts about social needs.
  6. Demonstrating a comprehension of the analysis of social phenomena presented in English, as well as observing their strengths and weaknesses.
  7. Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
  8. Distinguishing sociological concepts about social policy.
  9. Distinguishing sociological concepts, as well as the methods and techniques of social investigation commonly used to analyse social policy.
  10. Distinguishing the explanations of the access inequalities and the impact of social policies between classes, between genders and between ethnic groups that these actors take for granted.
  11. Distinguishing underlying social policies of specific conflicts.
  12. Effectively communicating the basic analysis of social phenomena in an elementary level of English.
  13. Expressing the debates regarding these approaches, that refer to social policy.
  14. Relating the concepts, methods and techniques used to analyse social policy with general theoretical and methodological debates.
  15. Relating the debates regarding these approaches, that refer to social policy, with the historical context in which they emerged.
  16. Relating the explanations of the access inequalities and the impact of social policies with the general theoretical and methodological debates.
  17. Relating them with the debates about state, social change and inequality.

Content

The contents of the subject included 5 topics:

1. The sociology of gender

  1.1. The construction of the research question and main currents

  1.2. Conflict, subordination, exploitation, domination

2. The study of masculinities

  2.1. Masculinities and gender perspective

  2.2. New masculinities: hegemony, subordination, complicity, marginality

3. Sexuality and gender

  3.1. Sociology of sexuality

  3.2. Field of study: social construction, sexual identity, practices and policies

4. Gender policies

  4.1. A brief history of equality policies: origins, resistance and challenges

  4.2. Gender justice: feminist and LGTBI agendas

5. The analysis of public policies from a gender perspective

 5.1. The measure of gender inequalities

 5.2. Gender assessment and impact of public policies

Methodology

The sessions will combine:

- Theoretical teaching presentations

- Seminars to discuss readings, research and proposals for action

- Group tutorials

 

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

1) Essay I: from the readings worked during the seminars I, II and III, the students will elaborate a critical essay.

2) Essay II: based on the model implemented during seminars IV and V, students will assess the gender impact of a public policy or social intervention project.

3) Research work: students will elaborate a research in group.

- All assessment tests will be returned and the possibility of retrieval will be given when the minimum required to pass the subject is not obtained.

- “Not presented”: not presenting individual or group activities

- If plagiarism is detected, the mark of the evidence will be 0.
