Objectives and Contextualisation

 

The nature of this course is very practical. On successfully completing the subject Traducció de/al francès, students will be able to:

  • Read literary texts in French closely and critically.
  • Identify and analyse the linguistic, stylistic and cultural features in a text relevant to the translation.
  • Identify and analyse the most common translation problems and errors.
  • Use effective strategies to solve them.
  • Present and discuss translation proposals both orally and writing.
  • Improve French language skills.
  • Develop critical and creative thinking skills.
  • Work autonomously.
  • Self-assessment of knowledge and skills acquired.

  • Applying the characteristic scientific methodologies of the different fields of French applied linguistics.
  • Generate innovative and competitive proposals in research and professional activities.
  • Master the French language in a professional level and knowing the techniques and methods in order to achieve the maximum capacity in oral and written expression.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analysing different mechanisms of oral or written productions in French.
  2. Communicating orally and in written form with a C2 level of French.
  3. Effectively communicating and applying the argumentative and textual processes to formal and scientific texts.
  4. Preparing an exhibition from the analysis of the current situation of a professional aspect related to the subject.
  5. Summarising acquired knowledge about the origin and transformations experienced in its several fields of study.

2. Stages of translation

  • Detailed analytical reading
  • Identifying the obstacles: grammatical, lexical, stylistic, cultural
  • Translation units
  • Translation techniques: literal translation, loan translation, transposition, etc.
  • Revision: criteria and procedures (re-reading, back translation).

3. Translation problems and strategies for solving them

  • The most frequent errors: contradictions, solecisms, "false friends", etc.
  • Idiomatic expressions
  • Culturems

 

Methodology

  • The course of Translation from/to French is fundamentally practical.
  • It provides intensive training in direct translation (from French to Spanish/Catalan) and an introductory approach to reverse translation.
  • We use a problem-based learning approach. 

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

OBSERVATIONS

  • The above information on assessment and assessment activities is merely a guide. The lecturer will provide full information when teaching begins.
  • Assessment is continuous. Task deadlines will be indicated on the first day of class.

 

REVIEW

  • When publishing final marks prior to recording them on students’ transcripts, the lecturer will provide written notification of a date and time for reviewing assessment activities.
  • Students must arrange reviews in agreement with the lecturer.

 

MISSED/FAILED ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES 

  • Students may retake assessment activities they have failed or compensate for any they have missed, provided that those they have actually performed account for a minimum of 66,6% (two thirds) of the subject’s final mark and that they have a weighted average mark of at least 3.5.
  • Under no circumstances may an assessment activity worth 100% of the final mark be retaken or compensated for.
  • The lecturer will inform students of the procedure involved, in writing, when publishing final marks prior to recording them on transcripts. The lecturer may set one assignment per failed or missed assessment activity or a single assignment to cover a number of such activities.

 

CLASSIFICATION AS «NOT ASSESSABLE»

  • In the event of the assessment activities a student has performed accounting for less than 66,6% of the subject’s final mark, their work will be classified as “not assessable” on their transcript.

 

MISCONDUCT IN ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

  • Students who engage in misconduct (plagiarism, copying, personation, etc.) in an assessment activity will receive a mark of “0” for the activity in question.
  • In the case of misconduct in more than one assessment activity, the students involved will be given a final mark of “0” for the subject.
  • Students may not retake assessment activities in which they are found to have engaged in misconduct.

 

PLAGIARISM

  • Total or partial plagiarism of any of the assessment activities will automatically be awarded a “fail” (that is, zero) for the plagiarised item.
  • Plagiarism is copying from unidentified sources and presenting this as original work (this includes copying phrases or fragments from the internet and adding them without modification to a text which is presented as original). 
  • Plagiarism is a serious academic offence. It is essential to respect the intellectual property of others, to identify any source uses, and to take responsibility for the originality and authenticity of all work produced.
