Since this subject is intended for students who optionally want to enter the field of research it is recommended to be studying or having studied the subject of Principles and methods. Also, it is convenient to have training in a humanistic degree that allows students to have formative foundations in the main methodological lines of the humanities and in the great paradigms of reflection of the XX and XXI century. It is especially valued, although not essential, the training in Spanish language and literature.
It is intended to show, with practical examples, the conditions that define language and literature research, the axes on which the disciplines are articulated and the relationship between theory and data. Introducing the student to the main theoretical paradigms and the corresponding practical applications from which research in Spanish language and literature has been thought.
I. Introduction to language research
1. Linguistic research. Main methodological axes. Early assumptions of research projects. Theories as models. Linguistic competence and linguistic performance. Oral and written language.
2. The experimental method in the study of language. Corpus and its constitution. Data collection, organization and exploitation techniques. Analysis and interpretation.
3. Data analysis in grammatical research. Introspection. Grammaticality vs. acceptability.
4. Process of writing a research paper. Thematic selection. Bibliography as a source of support. Theoretical and practical controversies: discussion and argumentation. Monograph and review.
II. Introduction to research in Spanish literature
1. The scientific study of literature. The texts. Literary research methods. Methodology of literary research. Literary historiography, literary theory, literature.
2. Analysis of literary texts. Manuals and bibliography. Libraries, archives and databases. Usus scribendi and authorship problems. Sources and intertextuality.
3. The critical edition. Edition criteria. The critical apparatus. Annotation. Prologue.
4. Process of writing a research paper. The starting hypotheses. Work planning. Indexes and drafts. The introduction, the state of the question and the conclusions. The style.
Being a research subject, which seeks to introduce students to the main methodologies of Spanish language and literature study, all of them will be combined as detailed in the content section.
The learning of this subject by the students is distributed as follows:
Directed activities. These activities are divided into master classes and classroom practices led by the teacher, which are combined with theoretical explanations and discussion around examples.
Supervised activities. These tutorials are programmed by the teacher, dedicated to correcting and commenting on problems that students may have when preparing the subject.
Autonomous activities. These activities include both time devoted to individual study and production of papers.
Evaluation activities. The evaluation of the subject will be carried out through written tests.

The evaluation will consist of three evaluation activities, one corresponding to the Language part (40%) and the other to the Literature part (40%). The remaining 20% will be obtained from a practical test. Students have to take all the tests and achieve a grade average equal to or greater than 5 in order to pass. It will require a minimum of 3.5 in each part in order to make average.
