In this course the key contents of the most advanced contemporary research of Spatial Planning will be addressed. The course will be structured through the critical study of key concepts, theoretical bases and lines of research and will offer theoretical, methodological and empirical tools to know the fundamentals of Spatial Planning.
This course is part of a joint project with the courses of Spatial Planning, Geographic Information Systems and City and Metropolitan Areas. The objective is to provide students with the conceptual and practical skills for the design and use of spatial tools. A practical exercise will be carried out, consisting in the recognition and identification of the urban, social and environmental characteristics of certain public spaces and the formulation of proposals for the management of these spaces. This practical exercise will be carried out in the neighborhoods of Collblanc-Torrassa (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat).
The organization of the contents of the course is structured around four topics:
1. Urban regeneration (Francisco Muñoz)
1.1 Urban regeneration. The evolution of strategies and actions. The consolidation of a 'canon' of urban regeneration.
1.2 Criteria of innovation regarding urban regeneration strategies and actions (I): beyond historical centers and central cities with a higher hierarchy.
1.3 Innovation criteria with regard to urban regeneration strategies and actions (II): urban social innovation versus physical activity on the urban fabric.
1.4 The new challenges of urban regeneration: sustainability, resilience and climate change;the landscaping and patrimonial elements of an ordinary nature;citizen participation.
2. Population (Antoni López)
2.1 Gentrification and substitution of the population. Renewal of population and aging. Suburbanization of poverty
2.2 The role of qualified migration. Tourism and sociodemographic transformation. Great dynamics of residential mobility
3. Housing (Juan Antonio Módenes)
3.1 Analysis and impacts of residential behaviors
3.2 Comparative study of urban residential systems
3.3 Estimation of residential demand in urban areas
4. Mobility (Monika Maciejewska)
4.1. How we study mobility? From traditional methodologies to the use of TICs
4.1. Mobility from a gender perspective
A series of conferences associated with the subject will be programmed.
The evaluation of the Module of Advanced Issues, as an integral part of the core program of the METIP 2020-21, will have a part of the specific evaluation of the module, in which the student must demonstrate a series of instrumental abilities and knowledge about the work in the sessions of the classroom and another part that will be the evaluation of the core work.
The evaluation will be distributed as follows:
- Individual work: 25% of the evaluation.
-Active participation in the sessions: 10% of the evaluation.
-Student work: 50% of the evaluation.
-Presentation of the core work: 15% of the evaluation.
The activities that could not be done onsite will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools. Exercises, projects and lectures will be carried out using virtual tools such as tutorials, videos, Teams sessions, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.

- Presentation of the practical exercise of spatial planning: 15% of the evaluation.
Core work is not subject to re-evaluation.
Students will receive the grade ‘Not assessable’ instead of ‘Fail’ if they had not submitted the course exercises.
VERY IMPORTANT: Total or partial plagiary of any of the exercises will automatically be considered “fail” (0) for the plagiarized item. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject. Plagiary is copying one or more sentences from unidentified sources, presenting it as original work (THIS INCLUDES COPYING PHRASES OR FRAGMENTS FROM THE INTERNET AND ADDING THEM WITHOUT MODIFICATION TO A TEXT WHICH IS PRESENTED AS ORIGINAL). Plagiarism is a serious offense. Students must learn to respect the intellectual property of others, identifying any source they may use, and take responsibility for the originality and authenticity of the texts they produce.
Assessment acitivities with a zero grade because of irregularities can not be reassessed.
In the event that assessment activities cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained). Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on Teams, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.
