Objectives and Contextualisation

The subject aims to provide resources for fundamental knowledge of contemporary social movements. It will analyze the role of subaltern classes throughout contemporary history. Concrete examples will be used to guarantee the essential gender perspective. Traditional and new approaches to research, analysis and presentation will be combined.

  • Applying the main methods, techniques and instruments of the historical analysis.
  • Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
  • Identifying the main historiographical tendencies and critically analysing their development.
  • Respecting the diversity and plurality of ideas, people and situations.
  • Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethical relevant issues.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.

  1. Analysing the main social and political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries.
  2. Communicating in your mother tongue or other language both in oral and written form by using specific terminology and techniques of Historiography.
  3. Engaging in debates about historical facts respecting the other participants' opinions.
  4. Identifying the main and secondary ideas and expressing them with linguistic correctness.
  5. Organising and planning the search of historical information.
  6. Properly using the specific vocabulary of History.
  7. Reading and interpreting the historical documents produced in the contemporary era.
  8. Recognising diversity and multiculturalism.
  9. Solving problems autonomously.
  10. Submitting works in accordance with both individual and small group demands and personal styles.
  11. Using the characteristic computing resources of the field of History.

1. Studying subaltern classes and social movements
2. The beginnings of social movements
3. European socialism in the 19th century
4. Anti-colonial movements
5. Social movements in the first half of the 20th century
6. 1968 and the new social movements
7. "Regressive" social movements
8. Social movements in the new millenium

 

Methodology

The teaching methodology will consist of the combination of master classes, where basic contents of the subject will be taught, and seminars based on previously offered information. Documentation for students will usually be available on Campus Virtual. Audiovisual media will also be a part of the class.

Assessment

  1. There will be two partial exams that will be held during the semester. The topics of the subject will be divided between these two exams. The evaluation of these exams will amount to 40% of the final grade.
  2. During the course a research paper will be required. It will amount to 40% of the final grade.
  3. An oral presentation or a review of a text suggested by the professor will amount to 20% of the final grade.

Please note:

 Students who have completed less than two thirds of the total assessment (exams and papers) will be considered as NOT ASSESSABLE.

 Thus, students who have not submitted at least two evaluation activities (exams and papers) during the semester will not be admitted to the reassessment test. Students who have a final grade that is enough to pass the subject will neither be admitted to the reassessment. The reassessment will be based on contents already evaluated in the two partial exams. In the Degree of History, the maximum grade attainable in the reassessment is 5.0 (passed).

 

Cheating and plagiarism will mean a zero in the qualification of any exercise. Students will have the right to review the results of the exams and the work done. The professor will provide the opportunity to do so.
