Prerequisites

It is advisable to have previously reached basic competences in cellular and molecular Biology, Genetics and Immunology.
It is convenient to have sufficient knowledge in Physiopathology, and Clinical Semiology and Internal Medicine.
It is essential to have achieved a general knowledge in Dermatology, the elementary lesions and the most frequent diseases.

The student will acquire the commitment to preserving the confidentiality and professional secrecy of the data to which
he / she may have access because of their learning performance in the assistance services. The student is committet to maintaining
an attitude of professional ethics in all his/her actions.

Objectives and Contextualisation

This is an optional subject linked to the Mention in Medical Clinic. It is taught in the fifth year of the Degree in Medicine, once the fundamental knowledge in General Dermatology
has been achieved and basic knowledge about the different medical and surgical pathologies has been obtain as well.
The general objective is the study of the skin manifestations of all those diseases that affect other organs and systems and that cause skin disease at the same time.
The knowledge of these manifestations will allow students to deepen their study of Dermatology, and to better understand the relationship of the skin with internal diseases.
In addition, and above all, they will be able to recognize those skin lesions that may indicate severity or that will act as a sign of a systemic disease, a malignancy, or an hereditary disease.
This subject reflects the importance of understanding the skin as an integral part of the human body and global health.

Competences

    Medicine
  • Establish a diagnostic approach and a well thought-out strategy for action, taking account of the results of the anamnesis and the physical examination, and the results of the appropriate complementary tests carried out subsequently.
  • Indicate the basic diagnosis techniques and procedures and analyse and interpret the results so as to better pinpoint the nature of the problems.
  • Maintain and sharpen one's professional competence, in particular by independently learning new material and techniques and by focusing on quality.
  • Obtain and prepare a patient record that contains all important information and is structured and patient-centred, taking into account all age and gender groups and cultural, social and ethnic factors.
  • Recognise and take action in life-threatening situations and others that require an immediate response.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Enumerate the necessary complementary explorations that can lead to accurate diagnosis in a case of dermatosis, including laboratory studies and serological, immunological, microbiological and dermatopathological studies.
  2. Establish a diagnostic and therapeutic approach in emergencies.
  3. Establish clear and effective communication with patients and their family-members.
  4. Identify skin diseases that can be the expression of a systemic illness.
  5. Identify skin injuries from possible life-threatening processes.
  6. Identify the major skin injuries and describe them appropriately.
  7. Justify the complementary examinations that can lead to the diagnosis of a systemic disease from the visualisation, diagnostic suspicion and confirmation of a particular dermatosis.
  8. Maintain and sharpen one's professional competence, in particular by independently learning new material and techniques and by focusing on quality.
  9. Put forward a clinical differential diagnosis based on skin injuries.
