By obtaining a degree, students will be able to express themselves orally and in writing. For this reason, any spelling and expression errors that may be committed by the students will lead to a score decrease in the final grade.
Activities, practical sessions and papers submitted in the course must be original and under no circumstances will the total or partial plagiarism of third-party materials published on any medium be admitted. Any submission of non-original material without properly indicating its origin will automatically result in a failure rating (0).
It is also expected that students know the general rules of submission of an academic work. However, students could apply the specific rules that the teacher of the subject may indicate to them, if they deem it necessary.
At the end of the course students have to be able to:
1. The concepts of linguistic variation and linguistic change: diatopic or geographical variation, diastratic or social variation, diaphasic or situational variation, and diachronic or temporal variation. Characteristics and mechanisms of language change.
2. Spanish in the world: the name of the language, Spanish-speaking countries, Spanish in contact with other languages, Spanish on the Internet.
3. Norms and use of Spanish. Panhispanism and polycentrism. Pronunciation, standard, speech patterns. Glotophobia and linguistic racism. Norm-generating factors: media, science, digital environments, and artificial intelligence.
4. The pragmatic-discursive perspective. Notions of pragmatics and discourse analysis. Forms of address in the Hispanic world. Politeness and discourse. Strategies for dealing with variation from a pragmatic-discursive perspective (communicative approach).
The student must carry out a continuous monitoring of the subject.
In order to achieve the stated objectives, theoretical explanations will be combined by the teacher with the completion of exercises and with the discussion of certain aspects related to the contents, which entails the active participation of the students. The learning of this subject by the students is distributed as follows:
- These activities are distributed in theoretical classes (57%), practices (30%) and debates and discussion (13%)
Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The teacher will assess this subject based on the completion of two activities that will have a weight of 50% each.
- Activity 1 Examination on the content of the subject at the end of the period.
- Activity 2 Written exercise carried out preferably in groups of two people, based on a group of topics suggested by the teacher at the beginning of the course.
The assessment of the subject will therefore be based on the completion of two activities in which the following aspects will be assessed:
- The assimilation of theoretical contents;
- the practical application of the contents; and
- the adaptation to the requirements of the activity in question.
In order to pass the course, all the activities must be completed. The minimum mark required to pass each of the tests and to be considered in the average must be equal to or higher than 5 points. The final mark is obtained from the sum of the marks for the two activities with their respective percentages.
On carrying out each evaluation activity, lecturers will inform students (on Moodle) of the procedures to be followed for reviewing all grades awarded, and the date on which such a review will take place.
Students will obtain a Not assessed/Not submitted course grade unless they have submitted more than half of the assessment items.
Plagiarism
In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.
