Objectives and Contextualisation

This module is devoted entirely to the development of a short research paper, on a subject freely chosen by the student under the supervision of one of the faculty members of the master's degree. The work may be a first sample of advanced scientific production or an applied research output.

Competences

  • Analyse, interpret, revise and produce texts in Catalan.
  • Apply the research methods of linguistics and literary studies.
  • Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Construct a well-argued critical evaluation of a linguistic or literary analysis.
  • Contextualise texts for analysis and production.
  • Continue the learning process, to a large extent autonomously
  • Seek out information in the scientific literature using appropriate channels, and use this information to formulate and contextualise a research topic.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.

Learning Outcomes

  6. Seek out information in the scientific literature using appropriate channels, and use this information to formulate and contextualise a research topic.
  7. Situate data and texts in their historical, social and cultural and pragmatic contexts for the purpose of analysis.
  8. Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.

Methodology

Calendar

1. Informative meeting: in the first session of the common module Competències i recursos per a la recerca i la professionalització students will be informed about the goals of the thesis, the selection of supervisor, and the calendar.

2. Selection of a topic and selection of supervisor among the faculty members of the UB and UAB involved in the master's degree. If you do the master's degree in one year, it is imperative to choose the subject before Christmas.

3. Brief presentation of the project to the faculty members of the common module and the coordinator of the module in the first session of the second semester of the common module (February).

4. Presentation, also within the common module, in separate language / literature sessions, of the state and future orientation of the work before the language or literature faculty members of the common module and the language or literature coordinators of this module (May).

5. Delivery and presentation of the thesis to the language or literature coordinators and the supervisor of the thesis, mid July, or very exceptionally, beginning of September.

It is obligatory to have a minimum of 5 appointments with the supervisor and deliver a minimum of 2 drafts of written materials.

To students doing the master's degree in 2 years and who are now in the second, even if they have taken the common module, we recommend (if they do not intend to present the work in the first semester) that they also make the two presentations in the common module.

The exact dates of submission of the work and the calendar of presentations will be communicated in due course.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.
