Prerequisites

In order to complete the course, previous musical studies are recommended.

Knowledge comparable to that of having successfully completed Musical Language I is considered the minimum required.


Objectives and Contextualisation

This course develops further the knowledge of music as a language with conscious and individualised work recognising and reproducing different musical elements. It offers tools for ear training and for better comprehension of the musical discourse.

Atfter the course the student is expected to:

  • Know how to read a musical score for four voices with some complexity
  • Be able to sing annotated melodies after preparation and to sing four-part music together with other students
  • Be able to recognise musical elements by ear, such as characteristics like timbre, structure, texture, pitch, tempo or rhythm
  • Know how to read and write musical chords 
  • be familiar with the function and process of the musical ear
  • Be able to harmonise a popular melody, creating a musical arrangement with different sections for a musical ensemble

Competences

  • Students must be capable of applying their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and they should have building arguments and problem resolution skills within their area of study.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must have and understand knowledge of an area of study built on the basis of general secondary education, and while it relies on some advanced textbooks it also includes some aspects coming from the forefront of its field of study.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Conceptually analysing a work of the subject matter.
  2. Critically taking part in classroom oral debates and using the discipline's specific vocabulary.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental problems, vocabulary and concepts of music.
  4. Discern equivalences and differences.
  5. Discern the basic elements of the main areas of music and culture and relate them to musical praxis. Develop the experience of cultural relativity in the act of listening.
  6. Recognise in musical praxis element of different cultures and different historical periods.
  7. Recognise the main models and their application in musical works.

  • Modality, tonality and atonality
  • Harmonic arrangement and chord notation
  • Timbre, dynamics and texture
  • Rhythm, pulse and tempo
  • Vocal technique
  • Musical notation in scores
  • Theoretical concepts regarding the development of the musical ear and musical capacity

Methodology

The methodological approach throughout the course will be based on the following principles:

  • Reflexive practice, peer-review and auto-evaluation
  • The connexion between listening, self-diagnostics, performance and creation 
  • Practical work individually and in groups
  • Free Computer software will be used 

On Moodle the student will find a diverse range of auxiliary material for different activities, such as;

  • Auditory training
  • Score reading

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

The assessment will be composed of the following elements:

  • Identification of written musical elements (scores, chords) 

  • Recognition of auditive elements (pitch, rhythm, timbre, tempo, dynamics etc.) 

  • Reproduction of auditive elements (pitch, rhythm etc.) 

  • Creation and arrangement of melodies

  • Self-assessment and peer-review of the musical ear

  • Reflexion and commentary regarding the evolution of musical capacity 

 

The assessment schedule will contain a number of different activities:

QUESTIONNAIRES RELATED TO THE COURSE MATERIAL 10%

There will be questionaries online and in the classroom, some will be evaluated with a passed/not passed only. These elements will not be obligatory to pass the course and cannot be re-evaluated.

KEY KNOWLEDGE EXERCISES 30%

There will several exercises evaluating key courseknowledge. These will be obligatory and a minimum grade of 4 for each exercise is needed for the medium course grade to be calculated. In the case of obtaining a lower grade, the student can ask to be re-evaluated in June.

VOCAL AND AUDITIVE EXAM 30%

This element will consist of different tasks, for example regarding score reading, song performance etc., throughout the course. This will be a compulsory evaluation element and the minimum grade will be 4/10. In case of obtaining an inferior grade, the student can ask to be re-evaluated in June.

COMPOSITION PROJECT 30%

At the end of the trimester the student must submit a compositional project with a harmonisation of a traditional melody as well as performing and recording the piece. This element is compulsory but without a minimum grade requirement.

Students with a medium score of 3/10 will have the right to take the re-evaluation exam (written assessment elements only).

Students will obtain Not assessed/Not submitted course grade unless they have submitted more than 1/3 of the assessment itemsOn carrying out each evaluation activity, lecturers will inform students (on Moodle) of the procedures to be followed for reviewing allgrades awarded, and the date on which such a review will take place. 

Any additional details regarding assessment and other details of the course will be published on the moodle page of the course at the beginning of the semester. 

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, thestudent will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject,the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.
