Prerequisites

Students must know the fundamentals and the methodological lines necessary to obtain a basic education in phonetics and phonology of the Spanish language.

They must know how to manage the bibliography and information, and interpret them critically.

They must be able to write correctly a scientific text.

Objectives and Contextualisation

The objective of this subject is to ensure that students become familiar with the basic notions of phonetics and phonology. Students must be able to describe the phonetic and phonological system of Spanish, which will give them the basics to be able to deepen these arguments in the subject Phonic Studies of Spanish. Perspectives and applications.

Competences

  • Analyse the main phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical and semantic properties of the Spanish language, its evolution throughout history and its current structure.
  • Develop arguments applicable to the fields of Hispanic literature, literary theory, Spanish language and linguistics, and evaluate their academic relevance.
  • Introduce changes in the methods and processes of the field of knowledge to provide innovative responses to the needs and demands of society.
  • Students can apply the knowledge to their own work or vocation in a professional manner and have the powers generally demonstrated by preparing and defending arguments and solving problems within their area of study.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Use digital tools and specific documentary sources to gather and organise information.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Acquire in-depth phonetic knowledge so that it can be applied to other interdisciplinary fields.
  2. Characterise linguistic phenomena taking into account the different levels of analysis.
  3. Describe the phonological system of Spanish on the basis of the distribution, relationships and articulatory and acoustic properties of its elements.
  4. Identify and describe the syntactic constructions of Spanish.
  5. Identify the constituents of a word and the levels at which they operate.
  6. Justify by means of appropriate terminology the analysis of data from a linguistic point of view.
  7. Make linguistic predictions and inferences about the content of a text.
  8. Propose new ways of measuring success or failure in the implementation of proposals or innovative ideas.
  9. Recognise acoustically and articulately the sounds and prosody of Spanish.
  10. Recognise the links between compositional semantics and other disciplines, both linguistic (syntax, lexicology, pragmatics) and non-linguistic (philosophy, logic, mathematics).
  11. Use digital tools to obtain, classify, interpret and analyse relevant data related to the study of Spanish language and literature.
  12. Use the appropriate terminology in the construction of an academic text and in the transmission of their knowledge.
  13. Use traditional sources to obtain, classify, interpret and analyse relevant data related to the study of Spanish language and literature.

Content

The subject is formed by 8 thematic blocks.

 

1. Articulatory description of vowels and consonants

Articulatory parameters for the classification of the vowels: oral opening and tongue position. Articulatory parameters for the classification of consonants: mode of articulation, place of articulation and sonority.

 

2. Acoustic description of vowels and consonants

Acoustic parameters for the classification of sounds: periodic and aperiodic sounds. Relationships between articulatory and acoustic characteristics.

 

3. The phonetic transcription

The phonetic alphabets: the alphabet of the Journal of Spanish Philology (RFE) and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

 

4. Prosodic phenomena

The accent. The intonation. The pauses.

 

5. The phonological system of Spanish

From sound to phoneme. Phonemes and allophones. Contexts and distributions. Variation factors.

 

 6. The syllable

 The syllable as a phonological unit. Syllabic division and structure. Nucleus and margins. Vocalic and consonantic groups.

 

7. Phonological processes of Spanish

The sounds in contact. The representation of the phonological processes of Spanish.

 

8. Phonological processes of Spanish

The sounds in contact. The representation of the phonological processes of Spanish.

Methodology

The learning of this subject by the student is distributed as follows:

 

(1) 35% of guided activities

 

These guided activities must respect the established time schedule in the previous section. Moreover, it has to be done under the face-to-face supervision of a teacher. Additionally,  it must be taken into account that these activities are distributed in theoretical classes (17.5%) and discussion on different types of documents (17.5%).

 

(2) 10% Supervised activity

Supervised activity (10%) is programmed by the teacher so that students work autonomously, supervised by the teacher though. These will be carried out before the autonomous activities so that  the teacher could understand if students are able to work autonomously. Otherwise, the teacher will suggest the aspects that must be reinforced to carry out the following activity.

 

(3) 50% Autonomous activities

In these activities the hours of study and the preparation of evaluable tests should be taken into account. These activities must be done by the student autonomously. The students will dedicate about totally 75 hours to these activities. Autonomous activities are consisted of three evaluable exercises which will take place in class: one of these is on phonetics; another one, on phonology, and the last one on phonetic transcription. These three activities will be assessed.

 

(4) 5% Evaluation activities

The teacher will carry out a continuous assessment on this subject through the three previously mentioned exercises. Additionally, the students have to do a written test. In this test, the use of written language in the proper context will also be assessed, since this subject corresponds to the field "Spanish language".

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Avaluació

L’alumnat s’ha de presentar a totes les activitats d’avaluació. Per aprovar l'assignatura, la nota final ha de ser com a mínim un 5, un cop s'hagi aplicat la suma dels percentatges.

S’assignarà un “no avaluable” quan les evidències d’avaluació que s’hagin aportat equivalguin a un màxim d’una quarta part de la qualificació total de l’assignatura.

Després de presentar cada activitat avaluativa, el professor o professora informarà l’alumnat (a Moodle) del procediment i data de revisió de les qualificacions.

 

Recuperació. Activitats no realitzades o suspeses

Podra accedir a la recuperació qui s’hagi presentat a activitats el pes de les quals equivalgui a un 70% o més de la qualificació final i que hagi tret una qualificació mitjana ponderada de 3,5 o més.

La recuperació es farà mitjançant una prova addicional en el període de recuperació fixat per la Facultat, considerant el que queda recollit a l'apartat de recuperació.

L’alumnat que es presenta a recuperació i supera la prova obtindrà una nota final de 5.

No hi haurà proves addicionals per a pujar la nota final.

 

Irregularitats en les activitats d’avaluació

En cas que l’estudiant realitzi qualsevol irregularitat que pugui conduir a una variació significativa de la qualificació d’un acte d’avaluació, es qualificarà amb 0 aquest acte d’avaluació, amb independència del procés disciplinari que s’hi pugui instruir. En cas que es produeixin diverses irregularitats en els actes d’avaluació d’una mateixa assignatura, la qualificació final d’aquesta assignatura serà 0.
