Prerequisites

 Language requirements: French C1.2 (CEFR).
Exchange students should contact the course coordinator regarding Spanish and Catalan language level requirements.

 At the beginning of the course students should be able to:

  •  Demonstrate knowledge of the basic methodological principles governing translation, professional and instrumental aspects and the contrastive problems for this language combination.
  •  Demonstrate they are familiar with literary trends in French.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge about different cultural aspects of French.
  •  Apply this knowledge to interpreting cultural references related to French.
  •  Combine different areas of knowledge when making decisions about cultural aspects of French
  •  Differentiate between literary genres and identify their specific features.
  •  Apply strategies to further their literary knowledge to be able to translate.
  •  Apply literary knowledge to be able to translate.
  •  Convey information about cultural aspects of French.

Objectives and Contextualisation

 The purpose of this subject is:

  -Provide knowledge and understand the methodological principles governing literary translation and non-literary publishing translation, revision of translations, professional and

  instrumental aspects  and   the problems of contrastivity of the linguistic combination.- Apply this knowledge to solve problems of translation of literary texts of various genres and

  non-literary editorial texts, as well as various genres and specialties, as well as the revision of translations.

 - Integrate knowledge to issue judgments on issues related to literary translation and non-literary translation and the revision of translations.

- Transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions related to literary translation and non-literary translation of translation and the revision of translations.  

- Apply their skills to undertake, with a high degree of autonomy, later studies for professional specialization.

Content

- Literary translation Methodology (basic norms of literary translation in the langauage combination);

    methodology for the translating texts for non-literary publishing.
 - Professional aspects of literary translation.
 - Resolution of translation problems of prose genres such as memoirs,
 stories, novel chapters, essays, letters and others. 
 - Resolution of translation problems of poetry genres such as poems, songs and others. 
 - Resolution of translation problems of dramatic genres such as plays, opera books and others. 
 - Labor area of the literary and non-literary publishing sector: conditions, types of work, associative sector,
 etc.
 - Review of translations as a professional assignment of the translator. 
 - Solving translation problems in humanistic and informative texts, such as essays, academic texts, fascicles,
  encyclopaedias and reference works, travel guides, etc.
 - Resolution of translation problems of journalistic texts such as compilations of articles, interviews and others.
  - Use of technological tools and sources of specific documentation for the translation of literary texts and texts
  for non-literary publishing.
  - Use of dictionaries, glossaries, specialised databases and parallel texts relevant to literary translation and
 non-literary  publishing.     

Methodology

To achieve the established objectives, this subject involves both lectures and practical.

All activity deadlines are indicated in the subject's schedule and must be strictly adhered to

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous. Students must provide evidence of their progress by completing various tasks and tests. Tasks and tests deadlines will be indicated in the course schedule on the first day of class. The information on assessment activities and their weighting is a guide. The subject's lecturer will provide full information when teaching begins.

Review

When publishing final marks prior to recording them on students' transcripts, the lecturer will provide written notification of a date and time for reviewing assessment activities. Students must arrange reviews in agreement with the lecturer.

Missed/failed assessment activities

Students may retake assessment activities they have failed or compensate for any they have missed, provided that those they have actually performed account for a minimum of 66.6% (two thirds) of the subject's final mark and that they have a weighted average mark of at least 3.5. 

The lecturer will inform students of the procedure involved, in writing, when publishing final marks prior to recording them on transcripts. The lecturer may set one assignment per failed or missed assessment activity or a single assignment to cover a number of such activities. Under no circumstances may an assessment activity worth 100% of the final mark be retaken or compensated for. 

In case of retaking, maximum grade will be 5 (Pass).

Classification as "not assessable"

In the event of the assessment activities a student has performed accounting for just 25% or less of the subject's final mark, their work will be classified as "not assessable" on their transcript.

Misconduct in assessment activities

Students who engage in misconduct (plagiarism, copying, personation, etc.) in an assessment activity will receive a mark of “0” for the activity in question. In the case of misconduct in more than one assessment activity, the studentinvolved will be given a final mark of “0” for the subject. Assessment activities in which irregularities have occurred (e.g. plagiarism, copying, impersonation) are excluded from recovery.

 Plagiarism is considered to mean presenting all or part of an author's work, whether published in print or in digital format, as one's own, i.e. without citing it. Copying is considered to mean reproducing all or a substantial part of another student's work. In cases of copying in which it is impossible to determine which of two students has copied the work of the other, both will be penalised.
