Objectives and Contextualisation

The subject examined in this subject refers to the political ideology, the cultural proposal, the strategy and the foundation of the movements and regimes of fascist, populist and national-populist character. We will take into account the different analyzes that have been carried out around the phenomenon of fascism, which will be the central objective of knowledge, establishing its relations with a similar space of mobilization and social representation, as well as an ideological profile, which is the populism and the national-populism of the twentieth century, especially in Europe.

Competences

  • Applying the main methods, techniques and instruments of the historical analysis.
  • Critically assessing the fonts and theoretical models in order to analyse the different historical periods.
  • Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
  • Respecting the diversity and plurality of ideas, people and situations.
  • Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethical relevant issues.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Appropriately identifying and using information sources for the historical research, specially about contemporary political regimes.
  2. Communicating in your mother tongue or other language both in oral and written form by using specific terminology and techniques of Historiography.
  3. Critically summarising the various historiographical explanations about the emergence and evolution of political regimes in the contemporary era.
  4. Engaging in debates about historical facts respecting the other participants' opinions.
  5. Identifying the main and secondary ideas and expressing them with linguistic correctness.
  6. Organising and planning the search of historical information.
  7. Properly using the specific vocabulary of History.
  8. Recognising diversity and multiculturalism.
  9. Solving problems autonomously.
  10. Submitting works in accordance with both individual and small group demands and personal styles.
  11. Using the characteristic computing resources of the field of History.

Content

The syllabus of the subject is the following:
 
     - The formation of the fascist ideology.
 
     - Spanish fascism (I). Fascism and Fascistization in the Second Republic.
 
     - Spanish fascism (II). Civil war as a constituent process of fascism in Spain.
 
     - Spanish fascism (III). The Fascist Way to the Catholic State (1942-1945)
 
     - German National Socialism. From the völkisch space to the mass fascist party
 
     - German National Socialism (II). The III Reich, consensus, exclusion, violence.
 
     - German National Socialism (III). The logic of extermination. The concentration system as the foundation of Nazism.
 
     - Permanence in the second half of the century. Neofascism and national-populism.

Methodology

      Attendance at theoretical classes led by the teacher
 
      Attendance to seminar sessions and tutorials led by the teacher
 
      Comprehensive reading of texts delivered in class or on the Virtual Campus
 
      Making reviews, works and oral exhibitions
 
      Personal study, based on the rhythms and bibliography fixed in class

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

The qualification will be obtained from the final exam grades and activities developed during the course. The calendar will be set the first days of class. It will be distributed throughout the class period in a reasonable manner, with tests available every month.
 
A minimum of two exams will be done  The individual work during the course will have a 20%. Group practices will have 10%
 
The acquired knowledge will be valued, the mastery of the concepts and the vocabulary of the discipline and of the studied matter, the maturity, the structure and the formal correction of the texts written the exams and works; the case of oral presentations, the fluency of the discourse, its adquation to the subject presented, the structure of the presentation, the materials used, the correct use of time, etc.
 
The spelling, expression, lexical and syntax correction of the written evaluation documents will be considered. Each misspelling will result in a penalty of 0.25 points, up to a maximum of 2.
 
The subject is approved if a minimum of 5 points (out of 10) is obtained with the sum of the grades of all the evaluation activities carried out.
 
To participate in the process of recovery of students must have been previously evaluated in a set of activities the weight of which equals a minimum of two thirds of the total grade of the subject.
 
In order to participate in the recovery process, students must have obtained a minimum grade in the average of the subject. This minimum grade is 3.5. That is, any student who does not arrive, with the work and exams done during the evaluation of the course, at an average of 3.5, will not be entitled to recovery.
 
Students who can not access the recovery will be classified as NOT EVALUABLE
 
Any irregularity committed by a student during the performance of a test (copy, plagiarism) will imply a grade of zero in the specific section of the evaluation. Several irregularities committed will imply a global score of zero.
 
The evaluation activities will be scheduled throughout the academic year. The dates of completion of the tests in the classroom and delivery of works and reviews will be communicated to students in advance. The teacher will establish a specific schedule of tutorials to proceed with the comment of the evaluation activities carried out.
 
The re-evaluation will consist of a global examination of the subject matter and will be held on the official dates established by the Faculty. In no case may recovery be considered as a means of improving the qualification of students who have already passed the subject in the normal process of continuous assessment. The maximum grade that can be obtained in the evaluation is 5.0 (approved).
  
The plagiarism or copy during an exam supposes a zero (0) in the concrete section of evaluation. It can not automatically imply the suspension of the whole subject. This would only be possible in case of several irregularities in the subject.
 

In the event that tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained). Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on Teams, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.

Bibliography

       The orientative bibliography is for consultation of the subject of classes. The teacher will indicate which specific chapters have to read. Other specific references will be given and abundant materials will be available on the virtual campus. All these materials must be worked out and their contents will be part of the final evaluation test.
