Prerequisites

To be studying or have taken the modules M4 Practicum or M5 Research methodology.

Objectives and Contextualisation

The aim of this module is to ensure that the student who completes the master's degree is able to carry out research on her/his own in the field of the history of science and has acquired the skills to carry out independent work.

Competences

  • Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Continue the learning process, to a large extent autonomously'
  • Gather and critically assess information for problem solving, in accordance with the discipline's own analysis methods and techniques.
  • Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • Use information and communication technologies appropriately in research and in professional activity.
  • Work independently: solving problems, taking decisions and making innovative proposals.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicate and justify conclusions clearly and unambiguously to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.

Content

The student will develop the master's thesis project of TFM proposed in M4 or M5, under the direction of the same tutors, until the final writing of a work of the master's thesis that has to have the maximum conceptual and formal correction.

											Sessions

											1. Compulsory general tutoring. CEHIC.

											2. Optional general tutoring. CEHIC.

July: Deadline for the delivery of master's theses through the Virtual Campus.

September: Public presentation of master's theses and evaluation.

Methodology

The module allows the student to develop the skills and competencies acquired throughout the master's degree through the completion of the Master's Thesis. The module consists of writing the master's thesis, once the project has been prepared in M4 or M5.

In the event that activities and tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained).
Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on TEAMS, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.

Meetings with supervisors 20 0.8 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 7, 6

Assessment

The Master's Thesis will consist of about 12,000 words (40 pages), not including the bibliography. It can take the format of an article that can be published in a journal of recognized quality, related to any aspect of the history of science.

The project director will send the module coordinators a qualification proposal (quantitative grade from 0 to 10 with a decimal) and a reasoned justification report.
On the day set by the calendar, students will publicly present their Master's Thesis to a committee of three faculty members; in the case of Master's Thesis in the Communication specialty, one of the members of the commission will be the external tutor.
The student will have 15 minutes to present the work and the conclusions. The final grade will consist of the average between the director's grade and the grades of the members of the committee that will examine it publicly.
