Objectives and Contextualisation

This  module  brings  the  student  to  the  research  frontier  in  Economics.  The  student  has  to  master  the  existing  literature  and  identify  interesting  open  questions  to  address.  The  student  has  a  tutor.  With  the tutor,  they  meet  regularly  to  discuss  the  contents  of  the  suggested  readings.  This  process  provides  the  student  with  a  solid  knowledge  of  the  state  of  the  art  research  in  his/her  field  of  interest  and  helps  the student  identify  interesting,  unanswered  questions.  The  tutor  evaluates  and  certifies  the  work  done  by  the  student.

  • Design, plan and carry out economic research
  • Express recommendations about economic policy at macro and micro levels
  • Make independent judgements and defend them dialectically
  • Search for information in the scientific literature using the appropriate channels and integrate the information to propose and contextualise a research topic
  • Student should possess the learning skills that enable them to continue studying in a way that is largely student led or independent
  • Students should be able to integrate knowledge and face the complexity of making judgements based on information that may be incomplete or limited and includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with the application of their knowledge and judgements
  • Students should know how to communicate their conclusions, knowledge and final reasoning that they hold in front of specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously

  2. Distinguish between different viewpoints dealing with an economic topic and understand the limitations of each
  3. Identify questions that are not answered in the literature or for which the answers could be improved giving rigorous arguments about the deficiencies of the existing models
  4. Interpret the modelling of a problem and the analytical conclusion deriving from it
  5. Make independent judgements and defend them dialectically
  6. Search for information in the scientific literature using the appropriate channels and integrate the information to propose and contextualise a research topic
