Translation Prerequisites

    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic methodological principles governing translation, the basic professional and instrumental aspects, and the basic problems of contrastiveness of the language combination.
    Apply this knowledge to solve translation problems of specialized genres from various specialty fields
    Integrate knowledge to make judgments on issues related to the translation of specialized genders from various fields of specialization
    Transmit information and ideas, raise problems and offer solutions for the translation of specialized genres from various fields of specialization.

Objectives and Contextualisation

The function of the subject is to develop the necessary textual skills in order to prepare the student for the direct translation of specialized texts in various fields of specialization.

Three credits will be devoted to translation and three language credits.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

    Understand written texts of diverse typology (with some complexity) on general topics of known fields (CFTR-FTI B2.1.2 to B2.2.1).

    Produce written texts of diverse typology on general topics of known fields (CFTR-FTI B2.1).

    Understand oral texts of diverse typology on general topics of known fields (CFTR-FTI B2.1).

    Produce oral texts with a certain complexity on personal subjects and general subjects of known fields (CFTR-FTI B1.2).

Translation

    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic methodological principles governing translation, the basic professional and instrumental aspects, and the basic problems of contrastiveness of the language combination.
    Apply this knowledge to solve translation problems of specialized genres from various specialty fields

-Reading strategies and techniques: Identification of the author's intention, identification of the reader's type, identification of the main and secondary ideas, identification of discursive marks, identification of the fundamental characteristics of variation of register and style, identification of the means of coherence and cohesion.

-Identification / understanding of different types of textual genres: Ereignis- und Prozessbeschreibung; Ergebnisberichte, Ereignisschilderung, alltägliche und belletristische Erzählung, Argumentation; Understanding of different types of didactic genres for language C: Sprachlern- und Landeskundetexte.

-Strategies and techniques for the production of oral texts of diverse typology on general topics of known or study fields (narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative).

- Pronunciation: orthophonetic correction exercises and prosodic adaptation.

- Exercises of distinction and phonetic reproduction (distinctive prosody).

- Strategies and techniques for the production of metatextual texts.

-Systematization of oral summaries of written texts (Inhaltsangabe).

-Strategies for the oral analysis of main textual characteristics of written texts. 

Knowledge and linguistic skills to study the C language and to be able to translate:

 -Linguistic and textual notions for the study of the C language and for translating.

 -Basis of analysis for textual models of genres of general written texts and didactic texts of language in Language C.

 - Classification of textual genres in German. German Macros and Superstructures. Textual functions of German textual grammar. Contrast with the classifications of the A languages.

 - Linguistic and extralinguistic features of the genres with "Sachliche Darstellung" or expressive function: Ausdruck, direkter und indirekter Appell.

 - Morphosyntactic, lexical, textual grammar and orthographic knowledge, knowledge of extralinguistic features.

Methodology

TRANSLATION

 The contents of the subject will be worked on in class in a practical way. The students will prepare the exercises and translations at home and will be controlled in class.

 Translations, which must be submitted on paper, will not be accepted after this date.

LANGUAGE

The German Foreign Language (DaF) skills will be broadened and deepened and the specific skills required for translation will be developed: On the one hand, the global competences and communicative skills of the foreign language, on the other hand, the special linguistic competences in German as the working language for translation, with special emphasis on those which are of pragmatic, intercultural and contrastive (CA) relevance for translation, heuristics or instrumental for language learning (kulturpaarspezifische pragmatische Kompetenz, Lernfertigkeiten, Instrumentale Fertigkeiten).

The subject is developed by working with and on texts as well as exercises from the book Mittelpunkt B1+ (Klettverlag). 

Training activities

 The abovementioned texts shall be applied for the abovementioned purposes:

-     the development of strategies and methods of reading and textual comprehension;

-     the development of strategies and methods of textual analysis (linguistics and grammar of text, translation analysis),

-     the treatmentof typical linguistic and intercultural problems manifested in current texts, followed by grammar tasks or exercises and/or performative or corresponding detection tasks;

-     the systematization of the textual synthesis and the bases of linguistic mediation by means of periphrases, reformulation or explanation of the textual contents;

-     the improvement of textual production in German (production of concrete copies following text models) and the revision of defective texts;

Following the German didactic method known as Lerner- und Handlungsorientierter Unterricht applied to the Teaching of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) for translation and interpretation, tasks based on the processing of authentic and current texts can be modified during the course, either according to the topicality of the texts or according to the specific didactic needs of the students, detected by means of continuous formative evaluation or diagnostic evaluation. The progressive definition and the quantity (between 4 and 10 activities) of the concrete works will therefore depend on the concrete didactic needs of the students, without exceeding the total of the stipulated hours.

The nature of the subject is theoretical-practical. It will deal with the basics of textual analysis (linguistic and translatological), reception and textual production in German. The student must demonstrate that he or she possesses and understands knowledge of the basic methodological principles governing translation, the basic professional and instrumental aspects, and the basic problems of contrastivity in the language combination.

This knowledge will be applied to solving translation problems of specialized genres from various fields of specialization, to integrating knowledge to make judgments on issues relatedto the translation ofspecialized genres from various fields of specialization and to transmit information and ideas, raise problems and offer solutions regarding the translation of specialized genres.

Assessment

Revision

At the time of giving the final grade prior to the report, the faculty will communicate in writing a date and time of review. The review of the different evaluation activities will be agreed between the teaching staff and the students.

Recovery

Make-up is available to students who have presented themselves to activities the weight of which equals 66.6% (two-thirds) or more of the final grade and who have obtained a weighted grade of 3.5 or more.

At the time of giving the final grade prior to the course report, the teachers will communicate in writing the recovery procedure. The teaching staff may propose a recovery activity for each activity suspended or not presented or may group different activities.

Consideration of "not evaluable".

A "non-assessable" will be assigned when the assessment evidence provided by the student equals no more than one-fourth of the total grade for the subject.


Irregularities in assessment activities

In case of irregularity (plagiarism, copying, impersonation, etc.) in an evaluation activity, the rating of this evaluation activity will be 0. In case of irregularities in various evaluation activities, the final grade of the subject will be 0.

Evaluation activities in which irregularities have occurred (such as plagiarism, copying, impersonation) are excluded from recovery.
