Students will be expected to be able to express themselves correctly orally and in writing. For this reason, any spelling and expression errors that may be committed will lead to a score decrease in the final grade.
Activities, practical sessions and papers submitted in the course must be original and under no circumstances will the total or partial plagiarism of third-party materials published on any medium be admitted. Any submission of non-original material without properly indicating its origin will automatically result in a failure rating (0).
It is also expected that students know the general rules of submission of an academic work. However, students could apply the specific rules that the teacher of the subject may indicate to them, if they deem it necessary.
Throughout the sessions, the evolution of the different types and origins of short stories and fables will be analyzed, both from the apologues and folk and popular examples (oral or traditional), of Eastern tradition (Calila e Dimna, Libro de los gatos..), bocados de oro, notices, historical anecdotes (real or apocryphal), of esopic tradition, coming from the specimens and sermons (Dominicans and Franciscans), biblical parables, the cultured (Cato's distiches, facetiae, or Erasmus's adages); the "jokes", the florilegiums, the bestiaries, etc., and how they influence each other.
The literary tale during the sixteenth and seventeenth century lives a splendor similar to that of all Spanish literature; the genre opens up to different manifestations that go from short tales like those of Juan de Timoneda, very similar to the current literary jokes, until the short novels of María de Zayas.
The didactic narrative will also use the tale to teach manners to the new courtesans, following that maxim of "sweeten the medicine" that they had learned in El conde Lucanor, by Don Juan Manuel. Works such as Avisos y guía de forasteros que vienen a la corte, by Antonio Liñán, or others, such as Pero Mexía, Luis de Pinedo, Juan de Mal Lara, Melchor de Santa Cruz de Dueñas, Lucas Gracián Dantisco, Luis de Zapata Chaves, Miguel de Luna, Agustín de Rojas Villandrando, Sebastián Mey, Antonio Liñán y Verdugo, Lope de Vega, Jerónimo de Alcalá, thus appear. The study will focus mainly on three collections: El conde Lucanor, by Don Juan Manuel, El buen aviso y portacuentos,, by Juan Timoneda, and Novelas ejemplares, by Cervantes.
Also, during the second part of the course an analysis of the modern tale is carried out starting from illustrated and neoclassical literature to Modernism and the dawn of contemporary literature, in relation to other narrative genres such as the novel and the short novel.
It will offer an overview of the evolution of genre and different trends and styles cultivated during the specific period, linking the studied texts with their historical, artistic and ideological context.
During the classes the critical commentary of a short stories anthology of the period will be made, paying special attention to the great masters of the nineteenth-century tale, so that students could exercise in the analysis and commentary of the studied genre and become familiar with the use of textual criticism' techniques and methods applied to the texts of the period and can discern among the main ways of dissemination of the modern tale.
THE SPANISH TALE. BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY
I. THE TRADITION OF THE TALE IN THE MIDDLE AGE AND THE GOLDEN CENTURY
1. The origin of the medieval tale: models, sermons, apologues and "punishments". Aesop and Phaedrus's tradition.
2. The collections of proverbs. From East to West.
3. Calila y Dimna, El conde Lucanor y los Castigos y documentos del rey Sancho.
4. The “cultivated” facetiae and the collections by Juan Timoneda and the Floresta española, by Melchor de Santa Cruz.
5. Cervantes and the theoretical setting of the tale. The Novelas a Marcia Leonarda, by Lope de Vega: between the tale and the comedy
6. The Golden Age collections: Castillo Solórzano, María de Zayas, Ágreda y Vargas, Pérez de Montalbán.
II. THE SPANISH TALE. TRADITION AND MODERNITY (XVIII AND XIX CENTURIES)
1. The tale in the literary tradition. The terms. The precepts. The tale during the
XVIII century. The tale and its diffusion. The birth of the modern tale.
2. The historical-legendary tales.
3. The fantastic tale during the Romanticism.
4. The tale and the Spanish costumbrismo.
5. The impulse of the folk tale.
6. Masters of the nineteenth century tale: Juan Valera, Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, José Fernández Bremón, Leopoldo Alas, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Armando Palacio Valdés, Jacinto Octavio Picón.
In order to analyze the influence and reception of the great authors, European modalities and movements in all ages of Spanish literature, the module has selected the genre of the tale to apply the study of the relationships established between European literary texts and Hispanic literary texts, integrated into a system in which they can distinguish unique features from those concerning the literary system to which they belong.

The evaluation of the subject will be carried out through the following activities:
- Class attendance, which is mandatory, and participation in the commentary of the proposed readings during the course (20%)
- Two works, previously agreed with the teachers, on the short narrative of an author, a thematic modality or the editing of one or several tales (40% + 40%).
The following considerations should also be taken into account:
- Course readings are mandatory.
- Students must achieve a final grade equal to or greater than 5.0, once the percentages indicated have been applied. In order to apply these percentages, the minimum admission grade of each paper must be equal to or greater than 3,5.
