Objectives and Contextualisation

Main objectives referred to three main aspects in regard with the urban geography:


- Description, explanation and analysis of the urban morphology and the urban functions considering different historical moments and at the present moment.


- General explanation of the relationship between the analysis of the city and the analysis of the territorial dynamics directly related with the urbanization process. Different information in regard with economic, technological, political, social and cultural aspects are presented. 


- Introduction to the main processes of change in regard with the urban and metropolitan spaces at teh present moment.

Competences

  • Analysing and explaining today's world events from a geographical point of view.
  • Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
  • Mastering the necessary theoretical knowledge in order to pose geographical problems in an integrated way and combining a generalist approach with a specialised analysis.
  • Students must be capable of applying their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and they should have building arguments and problem resolution skills within their area of study.
  • Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethical relevant issues.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analysing the main dynamics of today's world from a geographical point of view.
  2. Contrasting and comparing relevant geographical data.
  3. Identifying the ideas and expressing them in various languages with linguistic correctness.
  4. Interpreting today's main events from physical, economic, social and cultural diversity. 
  5. Posing problems about world inequality, population distribution, urbanisation, etc.
  6. Summarising acquired knowledge about the origin and transformations experienced in its several fields of study.

Content

- The city and the urban space in history: the analysis of the urban morphology.

- The mechanisms and agents defining the urbanization process. 

- The urbanization process (I): from the medieval city to the modern city. 

- The urbanization process (II): from the modern city to the industrial city.

- The metropolization process (I): from the industrial city to the metropolitan city.

- The metropolization process (II): from the metropolitan city to the regional city.

- The city at the present moment and in the future: main problems and challenges of the urbanization process in the 21st century.

Methodology

- Lectures.
- Presentation and discussion of audiovisual materials (documentaries and films).
- Reading books and journal academic articles.
- Discussion on basic key issues related with the materia.
- Practical exercices and essays.

Assessment

Detailed information on the course assignments and the exam:


Assignment 1. Essay on one of the books on the course bibliography or comparative analysis between study cases on digital information archives on urban issues.


Assigmnent 2. Research on different urban key issues based on the work with digital sources.


Assignment 3. Exercices dossier: different exercises proposed during the course will be presented composing a single document.


Exam. Written exa on the materials provided during the course (basic amb complementary bibliography, web pages, etc). 


Important notes:


- Handing assignments 1, 2 and 3 is required before the exam. 


- A minimum qualification of 5 is required on the assignments for considering an average final grade in regard with the exam.

 

Criteris d'avaluació: 


- Rigor and clarity exposing and explaining the issues considerd during the course. 
- Capability for using examples related with the bibliography and other materials provided during the course. 
- Initiative for completing the materials provided by the professor considering the own research. 


Detailed information about the re-evaluation:

-The re-evaluation will consist in an exercise considering the bibliography of the course.

-Handing the course assignements is required before re-evaluation.


- The qualification 'No avaluable' is only possible when non handing any course assingment. Handing one or more of the course assignements represents loosing the right to the qualification 'No avaluable'.
