Some groups entirely in English:
No
Some groups entirely in Catalan:

Some groups entirely in Spanish:

Prerequisites

It is necessary to have basic knowledge of phonetics, phonology and morphology
of the Catalan language, and a certain domain of the technique of phonetic transcription

Objectives and Contextualisation

This subject is part of the obligatory subject Catalan Language: Synchrony, which also includes
Catalan Phonology, Lexicology and Semantics, Catalan Syntax and Catalan Morphology,
most of which have been previously studied. The training objectives are the following:

(i) that the student can identify the acoustic and articulatory properties of
the sounds of Catalan on spectrograms and palatograms, respectively;
(ii) that (s)he can transcribe phonetically fragments of different dialectal varieties;
(iii) that (s)he can discern which phonetic properties are most appropriate for a formal
oral text and can put them into practice.

Competences

    Catalan Language and Literature
  • Analyze, with the help of the concepts of linguistic theory and the contributions of applied linguistics where appropriate, major phonetic properties, phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical and semantic of the Catalan language, its evolution throughout history and its current structure.
  • Developing critical thinking and reasoning and communicating them effectively both in your own and other languages.
  • Students must be capable of applying their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and they should have building arguments and problem resolution skills within their area of study.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.
    Catalan and Spanish
  • Analyse, with the help of the concepts of linguistic theory and contributions of applied linguistics when appropriate, the main properties phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical and semantic Catalan language, its evolution throughout history its current structure.
  • Develop critical thinking and reasoning and knowing how to communicate effectively both in your mother tongue and in other languages.
  • Students can apply the knowledge to their own work or vocation in a professional manner and have the powers generally demonstrated by preparing and defending arguments and solving problems within their area of study.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply appropriate and thoughtfully prescriptive principles of oral and written standard Catalan.
  2. Dominate oral and written expression in Catalan.
  3. Get syntactic structures of the simple sentence, complex and discursively modalitzada checked.
  4. Gramophone express correction to standard Catalan.
  5. Knowing the articulatory characteristics of the Catalan sounds.
  6. Knowing the articulatory characteristics of the sounds of Catalan.
  7. Master oral and written expression in Catalan.
  8. Producing a written text that is grammatically and lexically correct.
  9. Producing an oral text that is grammatically and lexically correct.
  10. Properly apply the knowledge gained to data collection and management of documentary sources application to the study of Catalan language and literature.
  11. Work independently in the synchronic and diachronic study of Catalan language and literature.
  12. Working independently in the synchronic and diachronic study of Catalan language and literature.

Content

1.Introduction. Articulatory phonetics and acoustic phonetics. Broad phonetic transcription
and narrow phonetic transcription.   2. Articulatory and acoustic properties of the sounds of Catalan. Vowels, consonants, sounds in contact.
Phonetic implementation of phonological processes. Dialectal differences in the phonetic realization of sounds.   3. Prosodic features. Segmentation, stress and intonation.   4. Orthophony and oral standard issues. Relationship between issues of Catalan phonetics and the
setting of the oral standard.

Methodology

The explanation of the subject will be complemented with the acoustic analysis of linguistic sounds

and sequences of speech with the use of the Praat program, and with the interpretation

of palatograms and lingual configurations obtained using the ultrasonic technique.

Phonetic transcription exercices of different dialectal varieties and oral presentations in class

will also be carried out, in which the indications that have been made

about the phonetic adequacy of formal oral texts must be put into practice.

Activities

Title Hours ECTS Learning Outcomes
Type: Directed
Oral presentation of theoretical issues and practices 63.5 2.54 10, 1, 8, 9, 6, 5, 2, 7, 4, 3, 12, 11
Type: Supervised
Supervision of research papers and oral presentations 9 0.36 10, 1, 8, 9, 6, 5, 2, 7, 4, 3, 12, 11

Assessment

The evaluation of the subject will be done in the following way:

											(a) Work on acoustic phonetics and bibliographic research, within the deadline set: 30%

											(b) Oral presentation: 10%

											(c) Partial written exam: 20%

											(d) Final written exam: 40%

The subject will be considered 'not assessable' when (a) or (d) have not been done.
The examination date, and the presentations
and the term of delivery of the research paper, will be announced with a minimum of
two weeks in advance.
The final test may be made on a date other than the one established only when there are
reasons of force majeure, which must be properly justified.

The re-evaluation can be accessed when the final course grade is more than 3.5 but less than

5, and the student has fulfilled (a) and (d) and therefore more than two-thirds of the total grade

of the subject. The re-evaluation will consist of a written test equivalent to at least 50% of

the course activities. The maximum reassessment note is 5.

At the time of each evaluation activity, the teacher will inform the students through the Moodle

application of the procedure and date of review of the grades.

In the event that the student conducts any irregularity that can lead to a significant variation

of the qualification of an evaluation act, this evaluation act will be qualified with 0,

regardless of the disciplinary process that can be instructed. In case there are several

irregularities in the evaluation acts of the same subject, the final grade of this subject will be 0.
