Prerequisites

General prerequisites

Students can register for the TFG provided they have passed 2/3 of the credits of the curriculum, that is, 160 credits.

The TFG is a 4th year second-semester subject.

Students who are registering for the TFG a second time or who can duly justify a personal circumstance will be able to do the TFG during the first semester if the Teaching Committee grants permission.

Since students enrolled in the Bachelor's degree final project (TFG) will have previously obtained credits in basic training and compulsory second-and- third year subjects, they should be able to express themselves correctly (both orally and in writing) in any of the Degree's specific  languages. 

Students are expected to know the general presentation guidelines for an academic paper.

Specific prerequisites

Specific prerequisites are determined by the branch of knowledge chosen to carry out the TFG. When the final degree project (TFG) has been assigned to one of the departments that are part of this degree combination, students should check the TFG study guides of the Catalan Philology Degree or Spanish Philology Degree.


Objectives and Contextualisation

General Aims

The TFG is a piece of work that must allow a global and synthetic assessment of the specific and cross-curricular competences of the degree.

The TFG involves two educational activities:

  • Writing an academic paper (15-25 pages long /4000 to 9000 words). The topic has to be related to one of the areas of the English and Classical Degree.
  • Oral presentation of the paper in front of a committee.

Competences

  • Analyse the main phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical and semantic properties of the Catalan and Spanish languages, their historical evolution and their current structure.
  • Apply scientific ethical principles to information processing.
  • Carry out effective written work or oral presentations adapted to the appropriate register in different languages.
  • Carry out historical-type studies on tendences, genres and authors of the Catalan and Spanish literary tradition.
  • Critically apply different analytical instruments to different types of linguistic data, whether in synchronic or diachronic.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rules of Catalan and Spanish and mastery of their applications in the academic and professional fields.
  • Innovate in the methods and processes of this area of knowledge in response to the needs and wishes of society.
  • Produce arguments applicable to the areas of Catalan and Spanish philology, literary theory and linguistics and evaluate their academic relevance.
  • Students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their study area) to issue judgments that include reflection on important issues of social, scientific or ethical.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Use digital tools and specific documentary sources to gather and organise information.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Answer the questions posed by the examining board in an appropriate manner.
  2. Apply appropriate and thoughtfully prescriptive principles of oral and written standard Catalan.
  3. Apply the tools and know consult the specific documentary sources.
  4. Argue in defence of one's own hypotheses on the basis of documentation, the literature and relevant data.
  5. Be able to draw up a work plan and the timing of activities.
  6. Choose a linguistic phenomenon about the Spanish language that raises discussion and know how to develop this.
  7. Develop effective written work and oral presentations and adapted to the appropriate register.
  8. Discover the potential of information sources offered by the virtual world and know how to manage it at work.
  9. Express ideas with a specific vocabulary appropriate to the discipline, following the rules of the Spanish language.
  10. Express themselves using argumentative procedures both orally and in writing, as required by a scientific work.
  11. Find solutions to problems in an autonomous manner.
  12. Identify themes and motifs of European classical and medieval tradition in all its literary and artistic events.
  13. Interpret texts in depth and provide arguments for critical analysis.
  14. Know how to use direct and indirect quotations in the text.
  15. Mention the sources consulted to avoid plagiarism.
  16. Organise the written discourse in such a way as to include in this work the parts of an academic text: theoretical framework, methodology, results, discussion of the data and conclusions.
  17. Present and explain overall perspectives on phenomena of modern and contemporary Catalan literature.
  18. Present, describe and critically analyze a philological issue and be able to properly present it orally and in writing.
  19. Produce an individual work that specifies the work plan and timing of activities.
  20. Produce an original piece of work that contributes to knowledge of Catalan language and literature, to the application of this knowledge, to its transfer to the professional sphere, or to its dissemination to the general public.
  21. Produce an original piece of work that contributes to knowledge of Spanish language and literature, to the application of this knowledge, to its transfer to the professional sphere, or to its dissemination to the general public.
  22. Produce work in accordance with academic ethics.

  24. Properly apply the knowledge gained to data collection and management of documentary sources application to the study of Catalan language and literature.

  27. Select critically and effectively synthesize the literature on literary aspects and / or linguistic phenomena.
  28. Strengthen the capacity of reading, interpretation and critical analysis of literary texts and language.
  29. Use the different formal and technical resources available for the object of study.
  30. Work independently in the synchronic and diachronic study of Catalan language and literature.
  31. Write historical interpretative essays on the modern and contemporary literary tradition.

Content

General Content

Degree project is a compulsory 6-credit subject. The project (TFG) is to be done individually and autonomously under the supervision of a member of the degree teaching staff.

The project must be original and unpublished. Plagiarism will be penalized (fail). Students are to sign a document (see Moodle) declaring that that have not committed plagiarism. This document is to be attached to the paper when it is handed in. Students may choose their topic from any of the branches of knowledge related to their degree.

The student must include a detailed summary (between 5 and 8 pages) of the work carried out, written in the language of combination that was not chosen. The summary must include the research objectives, methodology, an analysis of the results, and an evaluation of the conclusions. Linguistic competence and academic use in both of the degree’s languages will be assessed by a committee made up of specialists in both languages.

The committee will take into account both parts of the written work (produced in different languages), as well as the oral presentation, during which the student will be asked questions in both languages and will be expected to respond accordingly in each.

General Methodology

This subject has no weekly in-class teaching activities. The teaching methodology is based on the activities detailed in the table. TFGs are done individually. Students on an Erasmus stay may do their TFG in their guest university, except for the oral presentation, which will be done at the UAB and obtain full recognition of their TFG done in the guest university as any other subject.

Students who enroll in the TFG (Final Degree Project) for the second time or have a justified personal circumstance may complete the TFG during the first semester of the 4th year. This option will only be possible if they obtain prior consent from the TFG coordination.

Supervisor/topic assignment

  • Combined Degree students have to choose a branch of knowlege to carry out their TFG.
  • The list of supervisors and topics offered will be published during the month of September on Moodle.
  • Students will fill in a pre-registration google form and choose 10 preferences (5 preferences per branch).
  • Pre-registration forms must be completed considering the deadlines established in the TFG calendar (see Calendar).
  • Supervisors will be assigned in November according to transcript average marks.
  • The list of assigned supervisors will be published in November.

TFG Calendar 2025-2026

Semester B

  • July 2025: Registration period.
  • 1st – 17th October 2025: Supervisor and topic preferences to be manifested.
  • 20th October – 14th November 2025: Supervisor and topic assignment.
  • 21st November 2025: publication.
  • 17th June 2026 at 14:00: Due date for final TFG version
  • 25th June– 3rd July 2026: TFG oral presentations.

Semester A (exceptional cases)

  • 19th September 2025: Deadline to request to do the TFG in semester with the conditions specified in each syllabus.
  • 22nd – 26th September 2025: Supervisor and topic assignment.
  • 26th January 2026: Due date for final TFG version.
  • 09th – 13rd February 2026: TFG oral presentations.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

General assessment

The Bachelor's degree final project (TFG) must be written and orally defended in one of the languages of the combination depending on the Department where the TFG is to be carried out.

The assessment of this subject is based on the continuous assessment of three items and it consists of two parts:

  • Written paper = 60%-70% (writing follow-up: between 10% and 20%, finished paper: between 40% and 50%)
  • Oral presentation = 30%-40% Both the written part and the oral presentation need to be passed to pass the TFG

In order for the TFG to be evaluated, the student must have completed both parts: the written paper and the oral presentation. If the student does not attend the oral defense or fails it, the maximum grade for the thesis will be 4.

The supervisor’s approval is an essential requirement for the submission of the TFG.

Excellent With Honors Award

The qualification Matrícula d'Honor will be awarded by a specific committee taking into consideration the TFG mark and the 3rd and 4th year transcript average (75% TFG, 25% transcript). The committee will be composed by single degree coordinators and the coordinator of the combined degrees.

Publication in the DDD

Those students with a mark ≥9 will be asked to edit their work and sign a written consent for the TFG to be published in the UAB's DDD, and will be openly accessible for teaching, research or personal study purposes, except in those cases in which the author explicitly indicates the confidential nature of the TFG, or there are data that cannot be made public because of their private nature, or the author does not explicitly authorize the public access of the paper. In any possible use of the TFG, the author, nature of the paper and its link to the Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres (UAB) must be stated.

Reassessment

Reassessment is not applicable in the TFG.

Single assessment

This subject does not incorporate single assessment.

Plagiarism

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinaryprocess that may take place.

For this subject, since they are philology degrees, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to generate text or perform translations is not permitted. In all other cases, the use of such technology is subject to the discretion of the TFG’s supervisor, with prior written consent from the supervisor specifying the tasks for which the student may use it. The student must clearly identify which parts were generated using this technology, specify how it was used, and include a critical reflection on how it influenced the process and final outcome of the activity. This reflection, together with the supervisor’s written consent, must be included as annexes at the end of the paper. Final del formularioLack of transparency regarding the use of AI in the assessed activity will be considered academic dishonesty; the corresponding grade may be lowered, or the work may even be awarded a zero. In cases of greater infringement, more serious action may be taken.

Bibliography

The supervisor will provide the student with general and specific bibliographic references when the assignment to the department where the student will carry out their final degree project (TFG) has been made.
