Prerequisites

Previous knowledge concerning Ancient Greek history is not required. General knowledge about Antiquity is recommended.


Objectives and Contextualisation

The subject will be focused on the political and social evolutionary processes of Greek antiquity, with emphasis on the Classical and Hellenistic period. A primary objective is to introduce some of the most relevant historiographical debates about the historical milestones of Greek Cvilization. In this sense, the advent of hellenism will become paradigmatic. Finally, the subject also aims to show the situation of slaves and women in order to connect with other subjects proposed by this degree.
At the end of the course, the student must be able to analyze, process and interpret any type of additional material in order to demonstrate a starting level of the basic analytic tools of historical research.


Competences

  • Apply the main methods, techniques and instruments of historical analysis.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Students must have and understand knowledge of an area of study built on the basis of general secondary education, and while it relies on some advanced textbooks it also includes some aspects coming from the forefront of its field of study.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the main historiographic debates on antiquity.
  2. Identifying the specific methods of history and their relationship with the analysis of particular facts.
  3. Submitting works in accordance with both individual and small group demands and personal styles.

Content

The subject presents a double aspect (theoretical and practical) with the intention of providing the necessary contents and skills to the student for an adequate knowledge of the history of ancient Greece and its historiographical problems. Basically, the contents are divided into four sections.

1. Introduction and protohistoric Greece.

- What is Greece, what is being Greek? Historical introduction to the idea of Greek civilization.

- The Minoan and Mycenaean world.

- The Dark Age and Homeric society.

- The formation of the polis

- Archaic colonization.

2. Archaic Greece.

- The Archaic tyranny.

- Towards the classical era: the political models of Sparta and Athens.

- Brief story of Lydia, Media, and Persia.

3. Classical Greece.

- Wars against the Persians.

- Athenian imperialism.

- The Peloponnese War.

- From Spartan imperialism to the hegemony of Thebes (Greek federalism, 4th century BC)

- Brief history of Sicily and Magna Greece. The Carthaginians.

-The rise of Macedonia: the political and military reforms of Philip II of Macedonia

- Alexander the Great: conquest and the idea of a universal empire.

4. Hellenism

- The Diadochi

- The world of the Hellenism

- The Hellenistic kingdoms

- The Greek leagues

- The Irruption of Rome

The aim of the subject is to introduce the student to the critical analysis of primary sources and modern bibliography about the History of Greece. Regarding this, attending the theoretical lessons and participating in the class activities is compulsory. Likewise, the theoretical contents must be understood by working on independent activities, helped by the pertinent tutorials.

 

The challenges and opportunities for the study of history, especially that of Ancient Greece, posed by new technologies, such as AI or social networks, will be reflected and worked on.

 

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The evaluation will consist of a series of tests, which can be face-to-face or virtual:


- Creation of an audiovisual resource: The students will have to design and create an audiovisual resource for an event or character from the History of Ancient Greece. The resource has to be thought for its diffusion in social networks and, therefore, has to adapt the duration, the content, the language and the style.

- Exam of the first block. The test will consist of a geography test and the resolution of exercises on the content of the first block of the subject.

- Examination of the second block. The test will consist of a geography test and the resolution of exercises on the content of the second block of the subject.

- Class participation and attendance.

 

On carrying out each evaluation activity, lecturers will inform students (on Moodle) of the procedures to be followed for reviewing all grades awarded, and the date on which such a review will take place.

Erasmus students who request to advance an exam must submit to the teacher a written document from their home university that justifies their application.

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.

On carrying out each evaluation activity, lecturers will inform students (on Moodle) of the procedures to be followed for reviewing all grades awarded, and the date on which such a review will take place.

 

UNIQUE ASSESSMENT

In relation to the unique assessment option, the following activities will be carried out:

- Taking a written competence test with the content of the two blocks of the subject.

- Submission of an audiovisual resource of own creation.

- Submission of a commentary of a text by a classic author.

 
The date for single assessment is set by the faculty.

 

RESIT

The resit may be partial (of one or more of the tests) or total (for the whole subject). In the latter case, the resit will be carried out through a written test that encompasses the entire syllabus of the subject.

A limit will not be established on the maximum grade obtained in the recovery. However, students who apply for resit will not be eligible for the highest honours.

The same resit system will be applied both for continuous and unique evaluations.

 

NOT ASSESSED

Students will obtain a Not assessed/Not submitted course grade unless they have submitted more than 30% of the assessment items.

 

AI

This subject allows the use of AI technologies exclusively for support tasks such as explicitly required exercises by the teachers.

The student must clearly (i) identify which parts have been generated using AI technology; (ii) specify the tools used; and (iii) include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and final outcome of the activity.

Lack of transparency regarding the use of AI in the assessed activity will be considered academic dishonesty; the corresponding grade may be lowered, or the work may even be awarded a zero. In cases of greater infringement, more serious action may be taken.
