Prerequisites

To be able to take the Degree Project (TFG), students must accomplish the requirements established in the Regulations of the Faculty of Bioscience at this respect (see the Faculty website).

Objectives and Contextualisation

The Final Degree Project (TFG) constitutes the culmination of the learning process where the degree of maturity acquired by the student throughout their studies is demonstrated.

The main objectives for the students in this course are:

  • Develop a project on a specific and current topic in microbiology.
  • Apply in an integrated manner the knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired during the degree studies.
  • Use scientific sources and analytical resources in the contextualization and preparation of the project.
  • Generate a portfolio that contains in an orderly manner all the materials collected and prepared by the student to allow for the monitoring of the TFG.
  • Prepare both a written report and the necessary materials and supports for the presentation and/or dissemination of the project.
  • Discuss and defend the work done before an Evaluation Committee.

Learning Outcomes

  1. CM29 (Competence) Design integrative work in the field of microbiology, applying theoretical knowledge and acquired skills and valuing its social, economic and environmental impact to provide innovative responses to the needs and demands of society or to increase knowledge about the biology of microorganisms.
  2. CM30 (Competence) Critically review a topic in the field of microbiology, with ethical responsibility, gender perspective and according to the Sustainable Development Goals, which allows the design and execution of scientific work.
  3. CM31 (Competence) Contrast experimental results and expert opinions on a specific topic of microbiology to obtain conclusions and, where appropriate, propose new experiments or actions that allow designing and developing scientific work.
  4. CM32 (Competence) Explain effectively the results of research both orally and in writing, either in English or in one's own language or others, following the norms and conventions established in the field of biosciences.
  5. KM39 (Knowledge) Identify the main scientific challenges and real current environmental, health, industrial or social needs in the field of microbiology in order to design and develop scientific work related to microbiology.
  6. SM38 (Skill) Analyse data in the field of microbiology, accurately, using appropriate methods and tools to design and develop scientific work related to microbiology.
  7. SM39 (Skill) Use bibliography or Internet tools specific to microbiology and other related sciences, both in English and in one's own language or others, which allow the design and elaboration of scientific work.

Content

The Final Degree Project (TFG) is an individual supervised project based on topics related to any of the subjects or themes within the field of Microbiology.

The topics of the TFG can be approached from different perspectives and types (outreach work, experimental data analysis, or research, industrial, or technical-ethical-legal projects) and can generate various materials as the final result. Additionally, these types can also  be addressed through the methodologies of Service-Learning (ApS) or Challenge-Based Learning (CBL).

The topics of the projects are proposed by the faculty or suggested by the students, always within the context of Microbiology. The content will be developed and defined by the student under the supervision of a tutor throughout the TFG period.

Activities and Methodology

Title Hours ECTS Learning Outcomes
Type: Supervised
Tutorial sessions 7.5 0.3 CM29, CM30, CM31, CM32, KM39, SM38, CM29
Type: Autonomous
Preparation of TFG 37.5 1.5 CM29, CM30, CM31, KM39, SM38, SM39, CM29

Study and information processing 50 2 CM29, CM30, CM31, SM38, SM39, CM29

The management of the TFG is in charge of the following figures:

• The person in charge of the subject
• The faculty committee of the TFG, made up of those responsible for the TFG of the degrees of the Faculty
• Tutors
• The TFG evaluation commission

On the Faculty of Biosciences website, there is a direct link to all the information about the Bachelor's Thesis (TFG) and the schedule of the administrative and academic steps is outlined. As for the latter:

• Each student will be assigned to a tutor, who will carry out a follow-up of the student's work through four tutorials: the first one will be a first contact to give the appropriate instructions. The other three sessions will be scheduled at the beginning, middle, and end of work.
• When students enrolled in the TFG were part of a mobility program, the way to do tutorials could be by a telematic media.
• During the elaboration of the work, the student will be careful to update a portfolio that will contain in a coordinated way all the materials collected and elaborated.
• Depending on the type chosen, the student will prepare the appropriate materials on written, graphic or digital media.
• The common format of public presentation and defense of the TFG will be a poster.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Continous Assessment Activities

Title Weighting Hours ECTS Learning Outcomes
Assessment by the academic Tutor 50 4 0.16 CM29, CM30, CM31, CM32, KM39, SM38, SM39
Assessment Commission of the public defense 50 1 0.04 CM29, CM30, CM31, CM32, KM39, SM38, SM39

The evaluation of the TFG consists of two parts:
 1.  Assessment Committee (50% of the qualification). The common format of public presentation of the TFG in the Faculty of Biosciences is a poster, which will be evaluated by the TFG Assessment Committee of the degree;  three members of this Committee will evaluate the TFG in the poster sessions. The delivery will be made following the instructions of the TFG regulations. In exceptional and justified situations, not contemplated in the evaluation regulations of the Faculty, the delay of up to one week in the delivery will mean the reduction of the qualification by 2 points. Deliveries will not be accepted later. The presentation will be done on a specific date for each degree, determined by the person in charge of the subject, who will also have to specify the schedule.

The Assessment Committee will meet with the student in front of his poster to discuss his work. During this time, the student must have all the documentation that he has developed, such as the portfolio, the written memory, videos, and computer programs, and so on.

2.  Assessment by the tutor (50% of the qualification). The tutor will evaluate the written memory and the materials that have been generated throughout the work, paying special attention to the evolution of the student's work, through the different tutorial sessions, and the fulfillment of the objectives set.

The evaluation requires the qualification of both the tutor and the Assessment Committee. Otherwise, the TFG will be NOT EVALUABLE.
If it is necessary, the person in charge of the TFG may select a maximum number of students equal to double the maximum number of honors qualifications that can be awarded among those who have achieved the best qualifications. In this case, selected students who wish to pursue the maximum qualification will be required to make an oral and public presentation and defend their TFG in front of theEvaluation Committee on a specific date.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI):

For this subject, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is permitted exclusively in support tasks, such as bibliographic or information searches, text correction or translations, or others at the discretion of the teaching staff.

The student must clearly identify which parts have been generated with this technology, specify the tools used and include a critical reflection on how these have influenced the process and the final result of the activity. The lack of transparency in the use of AI in this evaluable activity will be considered a lack of academic honesty and may lead to a partial or total penalty in the grade of the activity, or greater sanctions in serious cases.

Bibliography

There is no specific bibliography for the TFG.

Software

There is no general program. Each student performs a different TFG.
