Prerequisites

The student should have completed the modules most relevant to their content area of interest.

To register for the course Internships,  the student must contact the Master's coordinator. This is to ensure the student's profile and the suitability of the internship align with the competences and learning outcomes of the Master's programme.


Objectives and Contextualisation

The aim of this course is to provide practice in the organisation and development of educational or professional processes. It prepares students for the requirements of professional environments through practical experience in a specific field.

Students will be part of an academic or professional context that will allow them to apply the knowledge acquired in the master's degree in a practical way. Once they have finished the internship, they will be familiar with both the requirements and the opportunities they will have in the professional area they have chosen.

 


Learning Outcomes

  1. CA29 (Competence) Create proposals to tackle the challenges associated with the English language, literature and culture which arise in specific professional environments.
  2. CA30 (Competence) Demonstrate proactivity and the ability to adapt to various professional contexts.
  3. CA31 (Competence) Work satisfactorily in multilingual and interdisciplinary teams in the professional sphere.
  4. KA30 (Knowledge) Recognise the different varieties of English and their use linked to contrasting functions and contexts in transnational professional and/or academic settings.
  5. KA31 (Knowledge) Contrast the various English registers and genres used in formal writing in professional contexts.
  6. SA39 (Skill) Apply the methodologies and technological tools acquired during the processing and analysis of linguistic data to professional contexts.
  7. SA40 (Skill) Use the theoretical knowledge acquired to undertake a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary analysis of literary and cultural productions in the professional field.
  8. SA41 (Skill) Write fiction and non-fiction texts in the English language for professional environments at an advanced level.

Content

Students will be able to choose the type of internship placement from the list provided by the internship coordinator. Alternatively, they will be allowed to suggest an institution or company that will have to be formally approved by the internship coordinators.

The internship coordinators (Dr. Nicholas Spengler & Dr. Maria Rosa Garrido) will advise and guide students. Tutorials will be held to provide initial advice on the choice of placement and to monitor the development and progress of the internship experience.

Students will also be assigned a tutor in the company/school/institution in which their internship is carried out. The student will be able to observe and participate in the activities of the company/school/institution under the supervision of the tutor. 

Finally, the student will have to submit a written report with all relevant information about the company/school and activities carried out. For this purpose, they will keep  a diary of the activities during the internship. The report must include a critical reflection on the experience and what they have learned during the internship. An oral presentation of the work carried out and the learning objectives achieved will be required. 

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

The external tutor’s assessment will be 35% of the final grade. It will be based on the student’s performance in the company/institution. 

The student's final report together with the oral defence of the report will count towards 55% of the final grade. 

The subject coordinator will follow the student throughout the process. Their report will weigh 10% of the final grade. This item will evaluate the student's attitude, commitment and responsibility towards their internship/tasks.The course Pràctiques cannot be reassessed in the event that the student fails.

Students will obtain a “Not assessed/Not submitted” course grade unless they have submitted more than 1/3 of the assessment items.

No Matrícula d’Honor grade is awarded due to the optional nature of this grade and the heterogeneity of this subject in the different degrees taught in the Faculty.

This subject does not incorporate the single-assessment option.

 

VERY IMPORTANT:

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.

Irregularities refer, for instance, to copying in an exam, copying from sources without indiacting authorship, or a misuse of AI such as presenting work as original that has been generated by an AI tool or programme. These evaluation activities will not be re-assessed.
