Prerequisites

This course is designed for students with Catalan and Spanish as first languages and who should be able to produce clear, well-structured and grammatically correct written and spoken Catalan and Spanish.

 

Note for exchange students. Spanish and Catalan and equivalent native/near-native levels are required in both languages, so as a general rule this course is not suitable for exchange students. However, exceptional cases will be considered – if you think this applies, then contact the course coordinator.


Objectives and Contextualisation

The aim of this subject is to mark out the specificities and expressive resources in Catalan and Spanish and acquire translation habits concerning different types of texts (narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative and instructive) reflecting different degrees of structural complexity and linguistic variation (mode, tone, field and style).
 
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
 
- Show knowledge of the peculiarities and expressive resources in both languages.

  -Apply this knowledge to translating different text types reflecting different degrees of complexity from Catalan into Spanish and from Spanish into Catalan, as well as applying the appropriate translation strategies

Content

Solving contrasting difficulties: differences in lexical, morphosyntactic and textual conventions of writing.
Solving problems of translation of genres not specialized in standard language of different types: narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative and instructive.
Solving translation problems derived from the textual tone (vulgar, informal, formal, solemn, etc.).
Solving translation problems derived from textual mode (written to be read aloud, written to be said, etc.).
Solving translation problems derived from the style of the text (clear/obscure, concise / pompous, rigid and archaic/natural, etc.).

Solving basic translation problems derived from the thematic field.
Use of relevant query tools for the translation of non-specialized texts.
The contents of the subject will be worked out in class, through Teams program or  moodle classroom in a practical way as the translations of the texts in the course dossier will be corrected and he problems they present and the possible solutions in class.
At the same time, theoretical contentswill bepresented referring to the interferences between the two languages, which the student will have to apply in practice. (Differences in the use of articles, nouns, adjectives, verbal divergences, pronouns. Lexicon Register and domains. Phraseology, idioms).



Methodology

Translation A-A is structured in a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part includes a quantity of time and dedication that is much lesser than the practical, although it is essential to correctly develop translational practice. One part of the course will be devoted to the theoretical contents and another part will be reserved for translation practices, during which the possible translation "models" will be derived from the work of the students, the comment and the correction of the translations students will have prepared previously; we will also benefit from existing models, of prestigious translations which, of course, will be considered as a potential solution.

 
Observations
1. The fulfillment of the program will depend on the pace of work and the needs of the group.
2. The learning contents - and, consequently, the assessment - may change over the course of the semester if agreed by the teacher and the majority of the students who attend regularly in class.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

Continuous assessment

Students must provide evidence of their progress by completing various tasks and tests. These activities are detailed in the table at the end of this section of the Study Guide.

Review

When publishing final marks prior to recording them on students' transcripts, the lecturer will provide written notification of a date and time for reviewing assessment activities. Students must arrange reviews in agreement with the lecturer.

Missed/failed assessment activities

Students may retake assessment activities they have failed or compensate for any they have missed, provided that those they have actually performed account for a minimum of 66.6% (two thirds) of the subject's final mark and that they have a weighted average mark of at least 3.5.

The lecturer will inform students of the procedure involved, in writing, when publishing final marks prior to recording them on transcripts. The lecturer may set one assignment per failed or missed assessment activity or a single assignment to cover a number of such activities. Under no circumstances may an assessment activity worth 100% of the final mark be retaken or compensated for. In case of retaking, maximum grade will be 5 (Pass).

Classification as "not assessable"

In the event of the assessment activities a student has performed accounting for just 25% or less of the subject's final mark, their work will be classified as "not assessable" on their transcript.

Misconduct in assessment activities

Students who engage in misconduct (plagiarism, copying, personation, etc.) in an assessment activity will receive a mark of “0” for the activity in question. In the case of misconduct in more than one assessment activity, the student involved will be given a final mark of “0” for the subject. Assessment activities in which irregularities have occurred (e.g. plagiarism, copying, impersonation) are excluded from recovery.

 

Single assessment

This subject may be assessed under the single assessment system in accordance with the terms established in the academic regulations of the UAB and the assessment criteria of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting.

Students must make an online request within the period established by the faculty and send a copy to the teacher responsible for the subject, for the record.

Single assessment will be carried out in person on one day during week 16 or 17 of the semester. The Academic Management Office will publish the exact date and time on the faculty website.

On the day of the single assessment, teaching staff will ask the student for identification, which should be presented as a valid identification document with a recent photograph (student card, DNI/NIE or passport).

Single assessment activities

The final grade for the subject will be calculated according to the following percentages:

1. Text translation from Spanish to Catalan, with dictionaries and internet access, to be delivered on the day of the assessment (20%)

2. Text translation from Catalan to Spanish, with dictionaries and internet access, to be delivered on the day of the assessment (20%)

3. Text translation from Spanish to Catalan, without dictionaries or internet access, to be done on the day of the assessment (30%)

4. Text translation from Catalan to Spanish, without dictionaries or internet access, to be done on the day of the assessment (30%)

Grade revision and resit procedures for the subject are the same as those for continual assessment. See the section above in this study guide.
