Prerequisites


Having obtained the basic knowledge that is given during the first two years of the degree of Speech Therapy and which provide a solid basis for the student to be able to start their applied-professional type training, which will be done in the language rehabilitation center and of the communication that has been assigned to him.

Objectives and Contextualisation

Since the training is carried out in a center of internships at the University in which the student is in contact with professionals of the speech therapy and patients, the subject contemplates three fundamental objectives:
										
											
										
											- that the student knows the conditions under which the work of speech therapy in the center where the Practicum is carried out, which presupposes the relationship with professionals from other disciplines (psychologists, doctors, physiotherapists, etc.) other institutions (EAP, nursery schools, CEIP)
										
											
										
											- that the student knows the techniques of evaluation and of logopedic treatment according to the characteristics of the patients attended the center
										
											
										
											- Let the student know and find out the needs presented by the families of the patients and at the same time know the appropriate resources for the advice and the specific intervention.

Competences

  • Act appropriately with respect to the profession's ethical code: respect professional confidentiality, apply professional criteria in the completion and referral of treatment.
  • Act with ethical responsibility and respect for fundamental rights and duties, diversity and democratic values.
  • Advise users' families and their general social environment, thereby promoting their participation and collaboration in speech-therapy treatment.
  • Appraise personal intervention and that of others so as to optimise this.
  • Design, implement and evaluate actions aimed at preventing communication and language disorders.
  • Explore, evaluate, diagnose and produce a prognosis of development for disorders of communication and language, from a multidisciplinary perspective.
  • Innovate in the methods and processes of this area of knowledge in response to the needs and wishes of society.
  • Make decisions and take responsibility for them.
  • Observe and listen actively throughout the various processes of speech therapy intervention.
  • Organise and plan with the aim of establishing a plan for development within a set period.
  • Prepare and write reports on examination and diagnosis, monitoring, termination and referral
  • Students can apply the knowledge to their own work or vocation in a professional manner and have the powers generally demonstrated by preparing and defending arguments and solving problems within their area of study.
  • Students must be capable of collecting and interpreting relevant data (usually within their area of study) in order to make statements that reflect social, scientific or ethical relevant issues.
  • Take account of social, economic and environmental impacts when operating within one's own area of knowledge.
  • Use the exploratory techniques and instruments pertaining to the profession, and register, synthesise and interpret the data provided by integrating this into an overall information set.
  • Working in intra- and interdisciplinary teams.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse a situation and identify points for improvement.

  5. Describe the characteristics of language, speech, voice or deglutition in patients, on the basis of observation.
  6. Design measures to promote communication skills in the population.
  7. Establish guidelines that help in advising relatives to collaborate in the treatment.
  8. Explain the explicit or implicit code of practice of one's own area of knowledge.
  9. Identify situations in which a change or improvement is needed.
  10. Identify the social, economic and/or environmental implications of academic and professional activities within one's own area of knowledge.
  11. Make decisions and take responsibility for them.
  12. Observe professional performance in the centre and describe that performance in the report on the work-placment period in the training centre.
  13. Organise and plan with the aim of establishing a plan for development within a set period.
  14. Prepare and correctly write examination and diagnosis, monitoring, termination and referral reports.
  15. Produce a diagnosis and prognosis of patient outcomes.
  16. Propose new experience-based methods or alternative solutions.

  21. Weigh up the impact of any long- or short-term difficulty, harm or discrimination that could be caused to certain persons or groups by the actions or projects.
  22. Weigh up the risks and opportunities of both one's own and other people's proposals for improvement.
  23. Working in intra- and interdisciplinary teams.

Content

The contents depend on the type of patients treated and on the characteristics of each center. In any case, the subject is characterized by the realization of pre-professional practices, with a final assessment of competences. These practices should allow the student to achieve professional values and competencies aimed at:
										
											
										
											- Practical knowledge of the speech therapy evaluation
										
											
										
											- The strategic planning of the speech therapy intervention
										
											
										
											- Practical training for individual, group and cooperative work
										
											
										
											- Knowledge of the professional performance and the environments in which the practice is developed
										
											
										
											- Personal resources for intervention: social and communicative skills, professional skills, assessment of professional performance, observation techniques, dynamization techniques or decision making
										
											
										
											- The use of information and communication technologies.
										
											
										
											- Search for documentation and specific information.

Methodology

The teaching methodology takes into account the activities carried out by the tutor of the practicum, the academic tutor and the student.
										
											
										
											Regarding the tutor of the practicum the programmed activities are the following:
										
											
										
											- plan the training activities of the students in the center of practices
										
											
										
											- guide and follow the student's work
										
											
										
											- Evaluate the work of the student by means of a report written at the end of the semester
										
											
										
											- oversee the memory that the student of practices has to present at the end of the Practicum.
										
											
										
											 
										
											
										
											Regarding the academic tutor, the programmed activities are the following:
										
											
										
											- Inform about the different centers of the Practicum (typology of patients treated, intervention techniques, schedules)
										
											
										
											-information of the corresponding evaluation procedure
										
											
										
											- Conduct a final evaluation that integrates, the evaluation of the practice tutor and the written memory
										
											
										
											 
										
											
										
											Regarding the student the programmed activities are the following:
										
											
										
											A) Attendance at the center of the Practicum, in which the student must complete a minimum of 75 hours in person.
										
											
										
											The student can perform, among others, the following activities (depending on the availability of the center)
										
											
										
											- observation of evaluation and intervention sessions
										
											
										
											- case tracking
										
											
										
											- direct participation in the sessions
										
											
										
											- participation in work sessions
										
											
										
											- information to the center's tutor of the evaluation activities that must be carried out at the UAB and its process of completion.
										
											
										
											B) activities at the UAB
										
											
										
											- assistance (if applicable) to tutorials
										
											
										
											- preparation of the final report

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

The competences of this subject will be assessed taking into account several aspects  (both, EV1 and EV2,  are individuals):
										
											- EV1: The use report of the center's internship tutor based on the attitude of the student, his initiative and active participation, his abilities with relatives and patients. This section constitutes 75% of the note. In case the tutor or tutor of the center value less than 5, the following year will be required to repeat the Practicum. It will also be necessary to repeat the Practicum II if the center's guardian informs that the number of hours of completion of the Practicum has not been agreed (75).
										
											
										
											- EV2: elaboration of the work of the stay in the center of practices in written memory format of the characteristics of the center, of the patients attended and of the activities carried out, according to script and requirements that will be attached to the Virtual Campus: 25%. Evidence 2 will be delivered via virtual campus within the term stated in the document of the presentation of the practices.
										
											
										
											Not evaluable: the student who has not completed the number of hours of attendance at the center (75hs)
										
											Recovery. Students who have not passed the subject but have a final grade of continuous evaluation greater than or equal to 4 (40%) will be able to recover only the corresponding part of the memory of the center in case the note of this evidence is inadequate

Bibliography

The relevant bibliography will depend on the typology of the patients treated and the characteristics of each center. The student has the obligation to search for suitable bibliography in relation to the pathologies that he observes in the centers, and to relate this information with the analysis of the case that is described in the final memory or in other sections of the memory that is consider it appropriate. This requirement will be considered indispensable to be able to evaluate and approve the practice report.
