Objectives and Contextualisation

1. Approach the concept of social movement and learn about the various theoretical and conceptual tools for its analysis

2. Analyzing contemporary social movements in the framework of economic globalization and in the context of the current crisis

3. Analyzing the relationship between social movements and social change

Content

Part I.

The concept of social movement. Theoretical Approaches: Basic concepts. Social movements and social change. Revolutions and social change. Historical time and social change. Space and social movements. Historical evolution of capitalism and social movements. The social movements of the second part of the 20th century (workers' movement, anti-colonial movements, student movement, feminism and environmentalism).

Part II.

Neoliberalism. The process of globalization. The role of States, international institutions and multinational firms. Working class transformations and trade union crisis. Resistances to the neoliberal globalization: the anti-globalization movement and the Social Forums. La Via Campesina. Latin America and the crisis of the neoliberal model: the indigenous movement, new urban movements and "Bolivarian" governments.

Part III.

Crisis and social movements. The crisis of 2008. International division of labour and emerging countries. Ecological crisis and the movement against climate change. The Arab revolutions. Resistance to austerity policies in the European periphery. The "indignados" and Occupier movement. The new feminist wave. The rise of reactionary movements. The protests of 2019. Corona-crisis and social movements.

Methodology

The course will be organized in master classes accompanied by class discussion and debate and in monographic sessions for the discussion of the compulsory readings.

The participation of the students in the class discussions is an important element in the functioning of the course.

The calendar will be available on the first day of class. Students will find all information on the Virtual Campus: the description of the activities, teaching materials, and any necessary information for the proper follow-up of the subject.

The proposed teaching methodology and evaluation activities may undergo some modifications depending on the health authorities' attendance restrictions.

In case of a change of teaching modality for health reasons, teachers will make readjustments in the schedule and methodologies.

 

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

1. Evaluation

The evaluation will consist of three parts:

(a) Final examination (40%)

The qualification criteria of the exam will be based on the understanding of the key theoretical concepts of social movement analysis and of characteristics of the different movements studied.

b) Essay (50%)

It consists of a free theme group work. At the beginning of the course, students will choose a topic related to the syllabus of the course. In order to do the work it will be necessary to use the compulsory bibliography of the subject and to look for specific bibliography.

The work will be evaluated taking into account the student's ability to apply the theoretical concepts explained in class to the specific case they choose for the work.

Length: 5000 words.

c) Seminars and class participation (10%)

Participation of students in class discussions and debates on compulsory readings.

2. Calendar and details

Exam: first day of school after Christmas vacation

Essay: to be handed in on the last day of school before the Christmas holidays

Seminars: they will be programmed during the months of October and December coinciding with the end of each part of the syllabus.

The evaluation of the essay and the exam will be communicated one week after the exam and one day will be enabled for the revision of grades and to attend to any complaints.

It is necessary to obtain a minimum grade of 4 in all the evaluation activities to pass the subject.

Revaluation: Students will be entitled to the revaluation of the subject. They should present a minimum of activities that equals two-thirds of the total grading.

Students who do not take the exam or do the essay cannot be evaluated at the end of the course.

In the case of a second enrolment, studentscan do a single synthesis exam/assignment that will consist of an essay whosecontent will be specified at the beginning of the course. The grading of the subject will correspond to the grade of the synthesis exam/assignment.

The student who performs any irregularity (copy, plagiarism, identity theft...) will be qualified with 0 in this assignment or exam. In case there are several irregularities, the final grade of the subject will be 0.
