In order to take this module you must have taken the "Egyptian Language I" and "Egyptian Language II" modules in the first year of the master's degree.
The general objective of this module is to specialize the student in Egyptian philology, that is, in the grammar of Middle and Late Egyptian and the translation of Middle and Late Egyptian texts in hieroglyphic and hieratic writing, through theory and practical lessons. In addition, it will deepen the learning of the philological and linguistic concepts, methods, and techniques of Egyptology, the history of the Egyptian language, and the philological and linguistic thought in Egyptology. These are the contents and activities that the student will have to work on:
1) Elements of the history and diachronic linguistics of the Egyptian language.
2) Deepening in the Middle Egyptian grammar: last issues of verbal morphosyntax; period syntax (sequentiality, dependence and subordination); theory of enunciation.
3) Late Egyptian grammar: graphemics, phonetic and phonological changes with respect to Middle Egyptian, nominal inflection, verbal inflection, syntax, enunciation.
4) Hieratic palaeography.
5) Reading and grammatical analysis of Middle Egyptian and Late Egyptian epigraphic and literary texts in hieroglyphic and hieratic writing.
6) Egyptian linguistics from Champollion to the present day.

Traducción y estudio gramatical de la Historia de Sinuhé completa y de pasajes escogidos de otros textos medioegipcios de nivel alto.
D. EGYPTIAN EPIGRAPHY
1. Análisis de las principales fórmulas de la epigrafía de los Reinos Medio y Nuevo.
2. Lectura, traducción y análisis gramatical de textos epigráficos de todas las épocas y sobre diversos soportes (muros de tumbas, estelas, sarcófagos, estatuas, vasos, escarabeos, ushebtis, anillos, etc.), prestando especial atención a su contexto espacial (ubicación o procedencia, iconografía relacionada, objetos relacionados, etc.) e histórico.
COURSE 2: LATE EGYPTIAN LANGUAGE AND TEXTS
A. DIACHRONIC LINGUISTICS OF THE EGYPTIAN LANGUAGE
1) Del egipcio de la primera fase al egipcio de la segunda fase: elementos de gramática histórica.
2) El neoegipcio en la historia de la lengua egipcia: cronología, rasgos definidores y ámbitos de uso.
3) Lengua y escrituras: neoegipcio, jeroglífico y hierático. Diferencias entre el jeroglífico y el hierático de los textos medioegipcios y de los textos neoegipcios. Particularidades gráficas del hierático neoegipcio. La escritura por grupos.
B. LATE EGYPTIAN GRAMMAR
1) Morfosintaxis de la flexión nominal. Cambios con respecto al medioegipcio. Artículos, demostrativos y posesivos. Indefinidos. Pronombres personales.
2) Palabras gramaticales: preposiciones,adverbios y partículas. Los conversores.
3) Introducción a la morfosintaxis de la flexión verbal. Transformaciones con respecto al medioegipcio. El infinitivo. La forma de estado.
4) Morfosintaxis de la flexión verbal (I): las formas autónomas.
5) Morfosintaxis de la flexión verbal (II): las formas no autónomas.
6) Sintaxis de la oración no-verbal: oraciones de predicado sustantival y adjetival.
7) Rematización: cleft sentences y tiempos segundos.
8) Sintaxis de la oración dependiente: relativa introducida por nty y circunstancial introducida por iw y por ir.
C. HIERATIC PALAEOGRAPHY
1) La escritura hierática: signos, ligaduras, disposición.
2) Ejercicios de lectura de textos hieráticos en lengua medioegipcia y en lengua neoegipcia.
D. LATE EGYPTIAN TEXTS
Lectura del original hierático, traducción y estudio gramatical del cuento de Los dos hermanos (papiro D’Orbiney) completo y de pasajes escogidos de otros textos neoegipcios.

IMPORTANT
If, for health reasons, assessment tests cannot be conducted in the classroom, their format will be adapted (maintaining the weighting) to the possibilities offered by the UAB's virtual tools. Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or exercise discussions through Teams, after checking that all students have a network connection and can access the platform.
Each of the two courses in the module is evaluated independently. The final mark of the module results from the weighted average of the final marks of the two courses.
In order to pass the module, the evaluation of each of the two courses that make up it must be passed.
The course Middle-Egyptian Texts (high level) includes the following partial exercises:
1) Two short tests of Middle-Egyptian grammar (transliteration, translation and sentence analysis);
2) Three partial exams of Sinuhe, and, possibly, other literary texts;
3) One epigraphy exam.
4) Four group works, two of funerary and literary texts and two of epigraphic texts.
The course Late-Egyptian Language and Texts includes the following partial exercises:
1) Two short tests of Late-Egyptian grammar (transliteration, translation and sentence analysis)
2) From the end of October, several short tests in class, on a weekly or fortnightly basis, of Late-Egyptian texts in hieratic writing (Two Brothers, D'Orbiney papyrus).
3) A group work on a literary text
As specified in the table, the evaluation is completed with classroom interventions, tutorials, and the student's folder.

UAB regulations on plagiarism in assessment activities
In the event that the student commits any type of irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the mark of an assessment activity, this assessment activity will be marked with 0, regardless of the disciplinary process that may be instructed. In the case that several irregularities occur in the assessment activities of the same course, the final mark of this course will be 0.
Procedure for reviewing qualifications
Test scores, short tests or papers may be reviewed in personal tutoring, during teachers' tutoring hours.
Recovery process
To pass the module, all evaluation activities (exams, short tests or assignments) must be passed. The teachers will set the dates when these activities must be repeated or re-submitted, if necessary. These dates will never be later than one month from the date of the test or submission.
The student will receive a grade of "Not assessable" if he/she has not completed more than 30% of the assessment activities.
