Prerequisites

To enrol in this subject (asignatura),is very important to register also for second year subjects that are linked to “Territorial and Environmental Laboratory: Report” in 2020-21 course: "Territory, Society and Environment in Catalonia" (code 104245) and "Qualitative Methods and Fieldwork" (Code 104248)

Moreover, it is convenient to pass 70% of the credits of the first year (7 out of 10 subjects) and 60% of the second year’s first semester (3 out of 5).

Objectives and Contextualisation

The subject is part of the thematic grouping (materia) "Territorial and Environmental Laboratories" together with another that you will find in the third year. As indicated in the Degree Report, this second year course aims to teach on how to elaborate “Territorial Diagnosis Reports”, whereas the elaboration of concrete proposals will be left for the third year subject. More specifically, the main objective of this course is the provision of knowledge, methods and techniques necessary for the preparation of reports through planning instruments: analysis of the conditioning factors (physical environment, administrative map, current planning ...), territorial dynamics (population, activities, mobility, land uses, resources and energy ...) and the different scenarios (population, jobs, environment ...).

On the other hand, the subject leans on knowledge from other subjects in the same year. For the 2021/22 course, complementary subjects will be "Territory, Society and Environment in Catalonia" and "Qualitative Methods and Fieldwork". In addition, the learning that is being acquired in other subjects (i.e.  "Spatial Analysis and Models" and "GIS and Territorial Management") will also be taken into account as described in the Grade Report.

Competences

  • Apply methods and techniques of quantitative, qualitative and field work analysis in the interpretation of territorial and environmental processes.
  • Draw up action and intervention plans in the territory which respond to sociodemographic and environmental problems.
  • Explain and represent territorial processes using statistical techniques, and graphic, cartographic and geographical information representations.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Work cooperatively in multidisciplinary teams.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define the main regional problems in a case study.
  2. Students must develop the necessary learning skills to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.
  3. Use statistical data and instruments to describe the geographical situation in a case study.
  4. Use techniques of quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  5. Work cooperatively in multidisciplinary teams.

Assessment

The assessment will take into account: first, the final results of the process of elaboration of the Report on Territorial and Environmental Diagnosis (Written report, oral presentation and poster); second, the gradual learning process will also be evaluated, based on the follow-up activities (exercises) and on a written exam over the methodology for the elaboration of the diagnoses. Moreover, the assessment of some aspects of the Report (contents, methodology) will be included in the join subjects "Qualittive methods and fieldwork" and "Society, territory ane environment in Catalonia".

The final mark of the subject will be the average of the marks obtained through the different evaluated assessments. Failure to participate in any of them implies that the entire subject is "Not evaluated". To calculate an average, you must have obtained at least a score of 4 in each one of the assessments.

Revaluation: If you miss a deadline it is still possible to negotiate the presentation of some assessment exercises (the methodological exam, the follow-up exercises or the poster). However, please note that due to the nature of the activity, it will not be possible to revaluate the written report or the oral presentations. At the time of each assessment activity, the teacher will inform students of the procedure and date of review of grades.

Attendance to the joint fieldwork and to oral presentations is mandatory. If you cannot attend, there will be a need for legal proof (justificante) detailing the cause. The non-repeated attendance to these activities will result in the assessment not being marked. You should attend at least 50% of the joint fieldwork and 2/3 of the lectures.

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.

In the event that tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained). Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on Teams, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.
