Objectives and Contextualisation

The objective of the subject "Contemporary History of Catalonia II, Francoism and the recovery of Autonomy" is to educate students in this area. To achieve this goal, they will be provided with the necessary instruments and resources so that they can acquire a solid knowledge of the processes and the political, social, economic and cultural phenomena developed in Catalonia during the period from 1939 to the recovery of self-government and the first steps of its development. On the other hand, it is very important that students have a strong knowledge of the country, from the historical, geographical, cultural, social ... perspective, given that the information will move in these parameters. The subject covers the second section of Contemporary History of Catalonia (generically, the second half of the 20th century or the 1939-1977 chronology) and maintains an effective relationship with the previous (History of Catalonia). Naturally, as can be reflected in social media, the main academic debates and of all kinds, the many interpretations and controversies that arise from the subject matter, will take place in class.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Communicating in your mother tongue or other language both in oral and written form by using specific terminology and techniques of Historiography.
  2. Developing the ability of historical analysis and synthesis.
  3. Engaging in debates about historical facts respecting the other participants' opinions.
  4. Identifying and using in an appropriate way sources of research for the study of contemporary Catalonia.
  5. Identifying the main and secondary ideas and expressing them with linguistic correctness.
  6. Identifying the main theoretical models that try to explain the characteristics of the current Catalan society.
  7. Organising and planning the search of historical information.
  8. Recognising diversity and multiculturalism.
  9. Relating elements and factors involved in the development of historical processes.
  10. Solving problems autonomously.
  11. Using the characteristic computing resources of the field of History.
  12. Working in teams respecting the other's points of view.

Content

SUBJECTS

Introduction.

1. The end of the Civil War in Catalonia and the Diaspora. 

2. The installation of the Franco regime and the Francoist policy regarding Catalonia. Repression, Catalan Francoism, etc. 

3. Anti-Franco opposition and exile during the forties. 

4. The fifties. The consolidation of the dictatorship. The slow reorganization of the labor movement. Underground. 

5. The changes of the sixties. Economic growth. The new social movements and the resurgence of the democratic opposition. 

6. The last years of the dictatorship. The extension of anti-Francoism. 

7. The transition from dictatorship to democracy and the recovery of autonomy.

Methodology

Although the Teaching Guide indicates a common methodological framework of the subject, the student must take into account that each teacher who imparts the subject will apply specific criteria when developing the explanations, the evaluation methods, etc. . Therefore, apart from the Teaching Guide, the student must be aware of the specificities that each teacher indicates in the development of the work of his group. Naturally, as it could not be otherwise, and as has been done so far, the content of the subject will be sensitive to aspects related to gender perspective.

Annotation: Within the schedule set by the centre or degree programme, 15 minutes of one class will be reserved for students to evaluate their lecturers and their courses or modules through questionnaires.

Assessment

 EVALUATION:
1. There will be a written exam, which will be located towards the end of the first part of the course. It will have value
40% on the final grade.
2. After the written exam, the teacher will propose a work, which will be the second part of
the assessment (40% in the final grade) and which must be handed in on the last day of class.
3. A questionnaire on the readings of the program will also be requested, with a value of 20%
of the final grade.


Necessary warnings.


Students who have NOT completed at least two assessment activities throughout the course (written exam, assignment, questionnaire) will NOT be able to take the resit synthesis test. Students who have a grade of the subject equal to or higher than the one passed will not be able to present themselves either. The recovery will be on the set of contents of the program's lesson. In the degree of History, the maximum mark of the recovery synthesis test is 5.0 (Approved).

The copy in the exam or the copy of written sources (plagiarism) in the work or the questionnaire will suppose a zero in the qualification of the exercise.

Students will have the right to review the results of the exam, the work and the questionnaire. Teachers will timely establish the mechanisms for doing so.
