Objectives and Contextualisation

Presentation of the last results, state of the question and prospects of future in the more notable fields of research in prehistoric archaeology at wide geographic zones, highlighting the studies of the Department of Prehistory in American and Mediterranean Archaeology. We will take advantage of the experience in current research projects, oriented to examine some of the key questions of social change (human evolution, emergence of first agro-pastoral societies, formation of the first states). Purpose is that students understand the issues that prehistoric archaeology has in these moments, and which are the findings and more significant historical-archaeological evidences that define scientific discussions in several regions of the world.

Competences

  • Analyse and summarise information from a critical perspective.
  • Choose and apply the most efficient methods and techniques at each stage of the historical or archaeological research being conducted.
  • Correctly present historical research results orally or in writing.
  • Critically analyse the theoretical and methodological standpoints that have guided research in prehistory, ancient history and medieval history.
  • Define, design, plan and draw up an original unpublished research project on history or archaeology, following the established academic and scientific parameters.
  • Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • Work in interdisciplinary teams.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse and summarise information from a critical perspective.
  2. Apply both knowledge and analytic skills to problem-solving within the field of study.
  3. Carry out a research project on a particular topic, addressing the state of historical and/or archaeological theory in that area.
  4. Critically analyse the relation between historico-archaeological sources and their interpretation.
  5. Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  6. Present archaeological research results and conclusions clearly, orally or in writing, to both specialists and non-specialists.
  7. Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  8. Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  9. Work in interdisciplinary teams.

Content

Contents of this module are directly related with experiences of research projects of the Department of Prehistory in several regions of the world. Therefore, they will address to theoretical keys and issues of current researches, the challenges of archaeology, as well as the main topics object of discussion in the academic field, in relation to the problems about subjects programmed. We take into account the aspects that affected women and men in the societies object of study.
