Objectives and Contextualisation

The aim of this subject is to discuss the approaches, concepts and procedures developed  in different researches on the processes of conquest and colonization between the 12th and 16th centuries. Although reference will be made to the general, European context of these conquests, contents will be mainly focussed on  the expansion of Iberian societies in the peninsula, in the Mediterranean and in Atlantic islands, and in America, from a comparative perspective. Specific processes of conquest, colonization and settlement will be studied, paying attention to the substitution of populations, to the distribution of booty and land among the conquerors and colonizers, to the settlement processes, to the creation of new forms of settlement and agrarian spaces, as well as to the impact on the indigenous societies.
