Objectives and Contextualisation

Advanced study of French and French-speaking culture from a multidisciplinary, scientific and humanist perspective adapted to the new academic, sociocultural and professional demands of the European area. It is aimed at those graduates who are interested in French and French-speaking studies from an academic and research perspective, as well as professionals from different fields and sectors, for whom knowledge of French language and culture, international communication and intercultural skills constitute a tool of specialization and professional promotion.

This module focuses on the artistic and cultural, sociopolitical, sociolinguistic and historical aspects of France and Francophonie. It has two main objectives:

-To offer students an overview of the cultural, sociopolitical and linguistic reality of Francophonie.

-Provide a map of French society and identify the main milestones of contemporary history of this country.

More generally, it aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge to understand some of the political and cultural references present in written or oral documents of the written and/or audiovisual media, making them able to return to a more global perspective and confront them in the realities of their own cultural environment.

Competences

  • Analyze critically a specific scientific issue based on historical and cultural sources.
  • Analyze the social, cultural and linguistic dimensions of various training situations in the context of a very good level of French, including situations which demand intermediation, mediation between languages and/or the management of plurilingualism and multiculturalism.
  • Design a programme and include teaching sequences or units.
  • Integrate knowledge and use it to make judgements in complex situations, with incomplete information, while keeping in mind social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Organize and plan the content of a work of research (article, monograph) and/or an oral presentation (class, report, paper).
  • Select and use existing teaching resources with the aim of planning and carrying out teaching activities and adapt and produce teaching resources in different formats (written, audio, multimedia) which can be used for teaching practice and teaching of French as a foreign language.
  • Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • Work individually and in teams, being able to analyze, interpret and synthesize the data and information generated.

Learning Outcomes

  5. Organize and plan the content of a work of research (article, monograph) and/or an oral presentation (class, report, paper).
  6. Propose programmes and teaching units in the area of history and culture.

Evaluation

The evaluation of the course will be continuous and will include both the various tests and the exams/tasks/exercises/comments delivered throughout the semester.

Participation: 20% (10% for in-person or virtual assistance and 10% for active participation).

Continuous Assessment: 40% (work at home or aimed at class, individualized or collective)

Final evaluation: 40%.

To participate in the recovery, students must have been previously evaluated in a set of activities whose weight is equivalent to a minimum of 2/3 parts of the total grade. Only students who, having suspended, have at least a final grade of 3.5 out of 10 are entitled to recovery. Oral presentations and tasks related to daily teaching activity are excluded from recovery.

Students who have completed less than 2/3 parts of the evaluation activities will be considered as 'NOT EVALUABLE'.

At the time of each evaluation activity, students will be informed about the procedure and the date of review of the grades.

In the event of a student committing any irregularity that may lead to a significant variation in the grade awarded to an assessment activity, the student will be given a zero for this activity, regardless of any disciplinary process that may take place. In the event of several irregularities in assessment activities of the same subject, the student will be given a zero as the final grade for this subject.

In the event that tests or exams cannot be taken onsite, they will be adapted to an online format made available through the UAB’s virtual tools (original weighting will be maintained). Homework, activities and class participation will be carried out through forums, wikis and/or discussion on Teams, etc. Lecturers will ensure that students are able to access these virtual tools, or will offer them feasible alternatives.
