Prerequisites

PLEASE NOTE: THIS SUBJECT IS TAUGHT IN THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES AND IS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING UNDER “ALTERNATIVE TEACHING” ARRANGEMENTS IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-2021. THIS GUIDE IS FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY.

Objectives and Contextualisation

The aim of this subject is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of foreign literature they need to be able to translate literary texts into their mother tongue.

On successfully completing this subject, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate familiarity with the different literary genres.
2. Differentiate between literary genres and recognise their specific traits.
3. Assimilate literary knowledge in order to solve translation problems.
4. Apply strategies to acquire literary knowledge in order to be able to translate.

Content

  1. How to approach literary texts.
  2. Great authors and literary trends, especially in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
  3. Comparative studies of the specific traits of literary genres.
  4. Literature, intertextuality and translation.
  5. Bibliographic resources on literary studies in a foreign language.

Methodology

Learning activities are organised into three categories based on the degree of student autonomy involved:

 -  Directed activities: carried out according to a set timetable and in the presence of a lecturer.
-  Supervised activities: carried out under the supervision of a lecturer or tutor.
-  Autonomous activities: carried out by students without supervision, requiring them to organise their own time and work (either in groups or individually).

The lecturer in charge of the subject in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will provide all information regarding the methodology used.
