Prerequisites

To follow this module, students must have the knowledge related to the Antiquity of a graduate preferably in History, Archeology, Classical Philology / Classical Studies or another official degree in the field of Arts and Humanities or of the Social and Legal Sciences.

Objectives and Contextualisation

The objective of this module is to provide the scientific and methodological bases that allow to develop the knowledge and competences of the student in the study of the Ancient History with a view to their research, teaching or professional dedication, in order to Know and understand in their diversity the different methods, tradition and the scientific news of the study of Antiquity. The theme around which this objective will be developed is the conflict and violence in antiquity from a historical and archaeological perspective.

Competences

  • Analyse a particular historical and/or archaeological problem area in prehistory, antiquity or the Middle Ages.
  • Analyse and summarise information from a critical perspective.
  • Correctly present historical research results orally or in writing.
  • Critically analyse the theoretical and methodological standpoints that have guided research in prehistory, ancient history and medieval history.
  • Discuss and compare scientific opinions and issues in open academic debate.
  • Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • Use the auxiliary philological sciences in the approach to textual sources related to specific periods and issues in ancient and medieval history.
  • Use the typical categories and vocabulary used in research and dissemination of prehistory, antiquity, and the Middle Ages.
  • Work independently: solving problems and taking decisions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse and summarise information from a critical perspective.
  2. Analyse the different approaches and understand the differences in their standpoints.
  3. Apply information from Greco-Latin texts to historico-archaeological research in the ancient and medieval world.
  4. Assess the various different methodologies, the tradition and current scientific.
  5. Critically evaluate the value of the different tools needed for research in archaeology and ancient history.
  6. Formulate and solve problems and interpret the causes of historical processes.
  7. Make suitable presentations of the materials handled or generated and the results obtained.
  8. Relate theoretical approaches to their historical context and to research methods.
  9. Solve problems in new or little-known situations within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  10. Systematise data from texts, archaeological data and data from scientific tradition on topics related to ancient history.
  11. Use acquired knowledge as a basis for originality in the application of ideas, often in a research context.
  12. Use the specific technical vocabulary for interpretation in the field of archaeology and ancient and medieval history.
  13. Work independently: solving problems and taking decisions.

Content

- The interpretation of the ancient war in modern authors (historiography of the conflict).
- Conflict and war in the Mycenaean world and in the archaic Greek lyric: contrast and similarities.
- Landscapes of war and conquest: impact of war following the conquest of the Orient by
Rome.
- The war in the historical account: philological analysis and "reality" of three conflicts (Battle of Qadesh, battle of
Mantinea, expedition of Flavio Arriano against the Alans).

Methodology

Guided activities: theoretical classes, public presentation of works, seminars for discussion of texts, study and discussion of documentary and archaeological sources.
Supervised activities: tutorials and exercises in the learning paths (individual or in small groups).
Autonomous activities: searching for documentation, reading texts, writing works, studying.

Assessment

The students, under the supervision of the teachers of the module, will perform two tasks on the same trematic one: a focus more from the historical perspective, and the other from its philological derivative.

The synthesis of this two approaches on the same topic will be presented in a workshop organized by the students themselves.

The Workshop is characterized by research and teamwork which, in its external aspect, is distinguished by the collection (in a systematic way) of specialized material in accordance with the topic discussed, with the aim of drawing up, a tangible product in the form of conclusions. In him the problem solving is emphasized, and the active participation of the assistants is required.
