It is advisable to have studied "Literatura Catalana del segle XX" (i and II)

Objectives and Contextualisation

The course aims to present an overview of the Catalan novel from the beginning of the twentieth century to the seventies through some significant texts that give an account for historical and aesthetic evolution of the genre.

The course combines the lessons about History of Literature with the reader's training.

On completion of "Novel·la Catalana del segle XX", students will be able to:
a) Demonstrate a basic knowledge about the history of 20th-century Catalan novel.
b) Show the right level of reading comprehension and analysis of Catalan novels and literary criticism texts.
c) Produce written elemental analysis of the literary text (papers with secondary sources).
d) Use properly secondary resources.
e) Express an informed assessment of the Catalan novels studied.

  • Apply concepts, resources and methods to Catalan literature literary analysis taking into account the framework of periodization of Western literary history.
  • Assess how rigorously argued and major trends, authors and most representative works of Catalan literature.

  • Interpret literary texts in depth from philological bases (stylistic, linguistic, etc.) and comparative.

Assessment

The subject consists of the following evaluation activities:

Exams: 50% on the final grade.

Exercises: 30% on the final grade.

Oral presentations and class participation: 20% on the final grade.

All evaluation activities are mandatory. An exercise not handed in or an exam the student has not sat will count as NA (no avaluable), that is to say, 0. The submission of any exercise invalidates the student to get a final mark of NA. 

Reviwing procedure: Students have a right to review their exercises with the teacher in a personal tutorial, on the set dates, never later than 2 weeks after the exercise/exam is marked.

The student will be entitled to the reavaluation of the subject if he or she has been evaluated of the set of activities the weight of which equals a minimum of 2/3 of total grade of the subject. To have access to reavaluation, the previous grades must be equal to 3,5 and less than 4,9. The exam is awarded a Pass/Fail mark, and the maximum possible mark is a 5. 

In the case of a second enrolment, students can do a single synthesis exam. The grading of the subject will correspond to the grade of the synthesis exam.

The students who performs any irregularity (copy, plagiarism, identity theft...) that can lead to a significant variation of the qualification act, will be qualified with 0 this act of evaluation. In case there are several irregularities, the final grade of the subject will be 0.
